;D I hope the is the right place to post this. Has anyone modeled any locomotives that were actually ordered by a real railroad but then cancelled for some reason? I'm thinking of alot of units that fall into this catagory, such as: Rock Island C430 Penn Central C636 (second order) Chessie B&O GP40-2 (4448-4474) Chessie C&O B30-7 (8299-8313) Union Pacific SD45 (2 more 60 unit orders) Union Pacific U33C Union Pacific SD39 Louisville & Nashville/FL SD50 (delivered as SBD) Clinchfield/FL SD40T-2 Spokane, Portland & Seattle GP38-2 ( delivered as BN) Erie Lackawanna U23B (delivered to L&N) Erie Lackawanna GP38-2 Detroit, Toledo & Ironton C420 Chicago & North Western SD80MAC Pennsylvania C636 (delivered as PC) Pennsylavnia U33C (delivered as PC) Denver and Rio Grande SD40T-2 (5414-5433) Conrail SD80MAC (4130-4204) Missouri Pacific SD50 (went to C&NW instead) SOO Line SD60 (went to C&NW instead) Southern Pacific GP35 (24units in 1966) Southern Pacific U33C (15 units cancelled in 1975) Southern Pacific SD45T-2 (also cancelled in 1975) Well, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Has anyone done any of these locomotive might have beens? Just something to think about.  |

NKP ordered EMC BL-2s but cancelled the order and bought ALCO PAs.

Detroit, Toledo & Ironton C420 - naw, wouldn't happen. DT&I was a pure EMD railroad, never owned anything but EMD's. The DT&I took control of the AA in late '63 when the Wabash unloaded it before the merger with the N&W. The Ann Arbor was planning to buy some Alco C420's, and had made arrangements to swap som power to the LV to try out their C-420's for 6 months. The DT&I ended up sending 3 brand new DT&I GP35's to the LV so the AA could test the Alco's, but since the DT&I mechanical dept was now in charge, they decided against any purchase.
Nice thought though. The only non-EMD stuff was leased units from other RR's when the DT&I was power short.

;D Actually the DT&I placed an order with Alco after testing LV 413, 414, 415 in early 1965, sales order 21231. They were to be numbered 200-204. The order was cancelled in June 1965, thus keeping DT&I all EMD.

 Randy, I wonder how the BL-2s would have been painted, standard freight of a variation of the PA scheme? Could be interesting to see.

On the SP&S GP38's not -2's came to the bn as SP&S was left no choice as alco had gone out of business the 2072 was the last new SP&S painted unit carried #200 never turned a revunue mile in sp&s paint the merger intervened and under bn's order was repainted green before ever leaving emd And ALCO's closure is also why there were only 2 C415s and 10 C636s. There was another order of each that never got built. |

Randy, I wonder how the BL-2s would have been painted, standard freight of a variation of the PA scheme? Could be interesting to see. According to the Nickel Plate Historical & Technical Society, they would have been blue and silver like the PAs ended up getting. NKP tested several F units in that scheme. |

Soo Line's first 21 SD60's were a canceled N&W (or NS) order. They even came wired for Pacesetter slow speed control. Soo Line was looking seriously at the GP49 or 59. EMD made Soo an offer they couldn't refuse on the SD60. Soo went back later for two more orders totaling 42 units.

CR's U36B's were built for Auto Train, but were never delivered (CR had the trucks swapped before they took 'em)
MEC's U18B's were from a cancelled SCL order

Dont quote me on this, but I pretty positive I read somewhere that the L&N had more SD35s on order but ended up with I think GP35s.

Don't believe Soo Line signed any orders for the 49's or 59's, but EMD knew they were getting close. The NS had ordered 21 SD60's, EMD had all the structural stee, sub assemblies ready, etc to assemble when NS canceled order. EMD went to Soo with a DEAL.
Soo had been looking at four axle units because they wanted a unit that could go anywhere (branch lines) on the system and they thought around 3000 HP was the practical limit for four axles.
As for the NKP and BL2's, I doubt they looked very hard or long. The BL2 did not have enough boiler capacity for the service the PA were to perform.

Southern Railway reportedly was looking at ordering F9s but went with SD24s instead when EMD announced them. They already had FM Train Masters in service, which probably was a part of the reason why they went with the SD24s.
