Another quick question: Could you please post some up close pictures of the rusty areas on the roof and nose? Thanks!

No I didn't dullcoat before weathering, but the issue was more my sloppy painting, meaning I accidentally drybrushed over the numberboards. I've done a few last minute fixes to get it ready for tomorrow, redecaled the numberboards, fixed the missing fan, and reattached the chassis. I don't expect to win any prizes, but I'm really pleased to have at least got something finished (finished enough anyways!) I will no doubt continue to noodle with this model over the coming weeks. I especially want to get a more convincing 'peeling paint' effect on the roof. Right now it is just paint on the surface, I need to get some depth into it to give a more convincing effect. Here are some pictures of the locomotive as it stands now.

So I managed to get 5273 finished in time to take it to the NMRA British Region Convention last weekend, and I filled out the paperwork to enter it in the modelling competition without any real expectations... and I won first place in the Diesel catagory! Talk about unexpected! I could hardly believe it!! Here is a quick picture of the trophy I received.

hey there ajuk, just looked through this post again and saw the news of the contest, Congrats!
I wouldn't say too unexpected, you did a very nice job and captured the overall feel of this loco. I grew up in NY/NJ so I've seen these in the Conrail days and now I see them as the patched units. I enjoyed seeing this!

Hi ajuk
I was just wondering which company/type Air conditioner unit you used. I'm trying to put together a NS GP38-3 and nothing looks quite right, although the one you used looks close. I'm hoping to find an Athearn rtr SD70 spare, but not holding out much hope.
Great news on the Bournemouth win. I must sign up to the NMRA UK branch.
Regards Dave

Thanks Aj
I ended up buying a Athearn spare a/c from their CR SD70, its actually a kit, but you do have to pay athearns spares standard $10 shipping. Looks good though.

That's not a bad idea, I might pick up a couple next time I order some parts.

If you do then you'll need the parts number. Although I did ask the general help email and they passed me on to the spares dept. But the SD70 non spartan cab ac is : ATHPG63864 (P) SD70 AC/ANTENNA SET $5.98
