After finally finding a drawing for this loco, I put a shopping list together....Heres the first installment! I started with shortening a Railflyer SD40-2 frame to 40' 6" wheelbase. I used diagonal cuts for strength, and staggered them from side to side. Here is a before and after. I started to add the fishbelly frame that is visable, because of the small fuel tank. I then worked on modifing the Cannon sub-base and nose. The nose had to be shortened from 81", to 65"

Very clean, nice looking work so far! I am happy to see a GP40TC being built, as it is such an interesting locomotive. I had been wanting to model one of these, but I didn't have the guts to tackle such a big scratchbuilding project. Glad to see someone else has!

Heres an update... After having to backtrack a little bit, I was finally able to get the frame modified to sit on Athearn trucks. I spent last night framing up one side of the long hood, untill I ran out of doors....

looks great, definately a unique prototype. Clearly this is a gutsy build, nothing but great work !!! I had to look up the prototype, wow, crazy, looks like EMD was worried about competing with a U boat, lol!! cptdb.ca/wiki/images/f/ff/GO_Transit_9802a.jpg

Well, I got the motor mounted on the weekend, and now I'm on the hunt for some trucks. It looks like BB Blombergs are going to limit the turning radius. So, I looked at a Genesis Mp15Ac, and they don't have the steel plates behind the sideframes, and that is where my clearance issues are! So.... any one have an idea where I can get a set of Genesis Blombergs? (a fuel tank off of the same unit would be cool too! ;D)

After my LHS said that Horizon had no stock of anything I needed, I called Athearn directly in CA, and, lo and behold they had everything!!!

cargostar, This is such an interesting build! I though doing a gp40ph-2 for NJT was gonna be hard. -I see that scratch building/railflyer can be very helpful. anyway I can't wait to see more pics, and I'm hearing more and more that Horizon/Athearn doesn't let on to LHS what they have in stock as far as parts. My LHS even showed me on screen that they were saying they didn't have anything, then I called and got my parts.

Honestly, I didn't ask the price..... I'll find out when they arrive, which may be a week or two, because they got shipped to my c/card address in Canada, instead of to me here in Iowa!!!

Finally an update with pics! Here is my version of a motor mount. It will get a bolt of some kind to hold it in the mount. The rear of the motor frame slips into a box glued to the frame. And I got back on the long hood sides. Now I'm back to waiting on more parts to fuel the next burst of ambition.
