Well....after a bit of a hiatus, mostly caused by my not wanting to do it, I've decided to rebuild the end of the long hood. In studing the pics, I'm off on door sizes, and the first "box" on the roof is wrong. So.... off it comes.

Well...The chopping happened. I ended up redoing the long hood end, and replaced the 18" wide doors, with 22"doors. It gave me the length I was looking for. Here is my first attempt... Here it is after the stretch... Tell me what you think!

I think the sides look more righter, but the rear needs to be less angled than a normal Cannon end. It looks to be almost SDP40 flat, but still angled.

I thought so too, but in several of the pictures, it sure looks like a stock EMD/GMDD end. The anticlimber is gone now also, as it appears that the point of the end is out over the coupler, with no real support.

No he's right. It isn't quite as deep of a "V" as standard. I have a photo of the rear of one sitting in Mac Yard diesel shops, I'll have a look...

It's buried at my dad's house. I'll look next time I'm there. The Amtrak unit is the same rear end.

Heres a pic I found online that shows the rear. You can see the point of the end in the shadow of the white area.

Ok, let's clear a few things. There were 3 rear-end mods (not counting the AMTK era): 1) normal as-built, no anticlimber, room to walk around (no photo handy). 2) rebuilt rear end, extended all the way to the rear, no anticlimber, no way to walk around the end. *Note the photo you linked above would also be this variation with no anticlimber 3) anticlimber added and hand handrails around rear, room to walk around. I hate this rear-end-of-the-month thing too. Ultimately, you need to decide what unit you're doing in what era in what rearend variation The rear V isn't as pronounced as a normal EMD end, it's more subtle. Sometime in their Amcrash lives, they had the rear rebuilt again and shortened back (!). Now assuming they just moved the rear hood face around and added/removed hood and side doors (assuming GO did the same), this is what the rear hood end angle probably should be: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=624167

That helps a bunch, just knowing the timeline of the rebuilds! I have seen the Amcrash pictures, and assumed that it was something that Altoona did when they went thru their last rebuilds.......

So, once again, the long hood end is sliced off. I then used my razor saw to cut part way thru the "peak" of the end, from the back side. I then gently flattend the peak of the end by applying pressure along the saw cut. Here is the difference once reinstalled. Since the peak was flattened, the end became wider, so material was removed to match the hood sides. Here is the current look. What does everyone think?

Very nice work, are those the Railflyer steps you are using? If they are, are they the older run or newer?
I have a GP40 that I wanted to make into a rebuild for my fictional line that was rebuilt from a CN 9300, those steps look like they would work.

If you can't find the railflyer ones, Minatures by Eric also makes the same part as a brass casting.

Have only been on here since oct 2012, and still looking at the builds. This is a great one!!!! Considered trying one of those, its Canadian, and its pre 1968. Bonus, Bonus. Thought about trying to fudge an atlas SDP35 into one, but now, think its a total scratch building. Did you work out the door arrangement strictly from the photos, or is there a sideview drawing somewhere out there? Looking forward to seeing it in paint!

Hello, I was wondering if this locomotive ever got finished and painted. I have to say this thread was very inspirational for me, watching it all come together, so much so that I started to custom detail and paint my own engines. Anyway I have been thinking of modeling this engine in N scale, and I would love to see this one in a finished state. The detail is just incredible, and the craftsmanship is outstanding. Great job.
