I've been thinking about building something similar to this and stumbled across this thread by accident.
My thoughts were something like this; If EMD had built this on an SD40-2 chassis as a test bed with a V-12 engine, then why not leave the existing long/er porches. Build it with the angled blower housing like the GP49 had. And I would want to use a stretched version of the GP60 dynamic brake housing. And this is just a thought, since this was a test bed and the engineers might be concerned about the cooling capacity, then why not build it with a short flared radiator housing. It would be something like half of the 4 fan configuration used on the SD45X from several years prior to this build.
These are just my thoughts about what I would want to build.

You know just by the fact that EMD built & sold SD40-2's into 1986 you really never know if they would have also thought that the SD39X/SD49 locos would be fine staying on the same build platform as SD40-2's since they did only have V12's. The only thing I can think of is progress as usual. Progress in body design and the super series wheel slip equipment that GP39X/GP49's came with. The same should happen for the SD's also. That's why my drawings are the way they are. But since none were produced, lots of options are there certainly.

I have a buddy who is having a stretched GP60 dynamic brake housing made right now. It is in the refinement stage and will be done through shapeways. He is doing this for his rebuild program. So the "modern" looking whatever you want to make up can be done with now a lot of work.

Just a couple quick "sketches". First one shows the unit with the forward dynamic brake configuration This one shows the extended GP60 type housing and preserves the longer rear porch. I know the cab isn't correct, it just happened to already be in place. This program doesn't render the best images in the world, but it's fun to use.
