Awesome build! I've been wanting to built an SDP for a few years now, just been too lazy to order parts from Atlas and find a drive that will be close to fitting. If I do build one, it will be Montana Rail Link #290, an ex. BN SDP40: -Trevor

Lookin' good so far!
You might want to replace the SDP35 turbo stack with an SD40-style one...

I like it.
I am curious how you wound up using an Atlas GP40 long hood and what looks to be the SD35 dynamic hatch? Got anymore info, as this unit is on my "must build" list, especially since I have the SD40-2 and U30C.

Hi Vincent,
To give you more back ground on the build. I used two Atlas SDP35 frames and the DB hatch, GP40 long hood. For the long hood I had to add a piece of styrene to the clean air room to make it the correct size. I also had to scribe the weld line for the clean air room as well. This make the build much easier, I had planed to use a RPP SD40 at first, but after looking at the drawings everything was right on the GP40 long hood the only modifications needed would be the clean air room and removal of the end for the steam generator compartment. So a lot less cutting was needed. All the SDP35 fan hatch needed was a new Cannon exhaust stack and she was good to go. I at first over looked it, but some of the guys were quick to point out that it was not the right stack. That was a big help, thanks to everyone who pointed that out. The nose cab and sub bases are all Cannon and Co. The steam generator compartment is built from styrene, a Cannon GP35 internal filter, compartment doors, and chopped down radiator grill and a Details West steam generator kit. The unit rides on a Athearn RTR SD38 which was milled down at the battery boxes and along the blower duct.
If you have any other question just ask.
Erik

Outstanding work. Between the kitbashing and the paint job, if this doesn't make the banner next month, I'd be shocked!

I used two Atlas SDP35 frames and the DB hatch, GP40 long hood. Vincent, A few questions, if I may: 1. I presume you mean two Atlas SDP35 *sills*, part number 9928207. 2. Which DB hatch, Atlas shows two part numbers: * 9920295 HO SD35 DYNAMIC BRAKE HATCH or * 9928295 HO SD-35 SDP DYN BRAKE HATCH I presume the second. 3. Which Atlas GP40 hood, they show two in stock: * 9894200 HO HIGH NOSE GP-40 BODY SHELL - UNDEC or * 9894210 HO GP-40 HIGH HOOD N/DB BODY ASSM I hope the first of these two as it's just $6 compared to $16 for the second. 4. I have spare Athearn Blue Box SD40-2 and SD45 drives, would either of these frames be the right length? I presume the side-frames from the SD45 are usable, possibly with the addition of brake cylinders. Thanks, Colin

Thanks, Colin HI Colin, Yes I meant sills, part number 9928207 and second hatch is the one you want 9928295 HO SD-35 SDP DYN BRAKE HATCH. AS for the body shell the first one listed will work 9894200 HO HIGH NOSE GP-40 BODY SHELL - UNDEC.
The SDP40 measures 40 feet even between bolsters and 60'6" over the end sills. So looking at the link below you should be OK to use the SD45 frame and trucks. Good luck on your project! If you need anything else just ask. Erik webpages.charter.net/altalair/sp_ftc.html

Thanks, Erik!
I do have some more questions already:
1. Which fans did you use? I think I'll go down the Cannon route as I presume the Atlas shell comes without fans?
2. Is the back end of an SDP35 shell usable, even if just for the back wall and/or grill on the "back section"? At just $4 for the shell from Atlas, it's very cheap -- just like buying some Cannon parts.
Cheers,
Colin

Hi Colin,
I used the Atlas fans. On the next one I build I will be using Cannon fans. I used the Atlas fans on this one to try to keep cost down. You are correct the fans don't come with the shell.

Thanks again, Erik. I just edited the post while you were replying! What do you think about getting an SDP35 shell just for the back section or even just the back wall?
And what fuel-tank options do I have? Atlas parts are very cheap, I could get one or two of theirs.

HI Colin,
You could use the SDP35 rear section, but I found it was easier (for me) to go the Styrene route. The fuel tank I used was a standard SD38 fuel tank. So if you look up the fuel capacity of the SD38 and match that. You should be good to go.
