I think I will pick up the SDP35 hood anyway, it comes with a quite useful 81" short hood too, for just $4. And I think I can use the end of the long hood and the grills of the rear section.
Which Cannon hood doors do I need for the rear section?

Erik that really turned out nicely I might have to send you the n scale sdp40 I was working on and have you finish the remaining body work and paint it in Denver Western paint

HI Colin,
I used the following doors. HD-1011 Hood Doors 18x78 Latch HD-1012 Hood Doors 18x78 HD-1013 Hood Doors 22x78 Latch HD-1014 Hood Doors 22x78
Vince let me know, I can make that happen for you.

Colin.the SDP35 rear is usable but would require some reworking as there is a bulge at the rear of the hood on the conductor's side that is not present on the SDP40.Other than this I think it is quite usable.

Thanks! I knew about the bulge and was considering just taking the back wall and the grills, but it might even be possible to remove the bulge and replace that with styrene and some Cannon doors. For just $4 for the SDP35 shell, I'm just going to get one and see. If it's not too much trouble, could you take a photo of the end? I'd really like to see what the bottom of the end looks like to see if it includes the two small access doors. How did you model those doors, Erik? I see brass etchings of some sort. Thanks, Colin

Hi Colin,
I used Cannon extend range dynamic brake doors for the rear doors on the SDP.

Erik,
Great job on this unit. This is last of the trio that I need to build. Thanks again for this post and to all who provided insight and updates.
Again super work and thanks for the inspiration.

This build was top shelf! Even though I don't model BN, I appreciate it, as a former employee.
There is one question about scratch building the steam gen. compartment. When you join the sheets of styrene, how do you round the edges? One example would be between the side and the roof.
Is is tube stock, which has been quartered?
Thanks,
Spike

IIRC, you can use sections of .030-inch quarter round for the radius. I think this is what Cannon recommended in their instructions.

Hi Spike,
Thanks for the kind words. I join them a few different ways. First if the shell is separate from the walk way. Most of the time I just glue the styrene together and round the edges by hand with sand paper. Second if the shell is all one part I will the use quarter round like Glenn mentioned. The last method I employ is I will use the cannon roof stock which already has the radius edge on it. I hope this answers your question,if you have any other questions just ask.

By chance do you have the dimensions of the scratchbuilt steam generator compartment? I'm beginning to think of possibly using my Kato SD40* for one of these. *even though I already did the sideframe swap with a P2K SD7

Thanks for answering my question. I never noticed Cannon's roof stock. Sanding edges round sure must take cars so it is all even.

If I may ask, how did you create the mount for the horn? I'm getting back to working on my GN SDP40, and that is something I will need to make myself.
