Here is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG overdue update on this build. The decals are on. NS lettering is from ShellScale. The data stickers are Microscale. After some deliberation on the drive I decided to use a heavily modified blue box frame with a Kato motor.

I finished detailing the truck sideframes today. The air lines are 0.010" brass wire. The sand lines are thin electrical wiring that are secured using AMB sanding brackets. I had them in my stash so I figured that I would just use them up. In the future I'll probably just use ones from Details West. Along the bottoms I replaced the little plastic nubs with NBW castings. The wheel slip modulation device is a DW casting that has been drilled out for 0.015 solder as the cable. I'll give these a wash and paint them tomorrow.

Now THAT is meticulous work. Wow! Looks great. SOU/NS high-hoods are some of my favorite locomotives, and you're really doing 'em justice. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Riding Dirty.
Here is the progress I have made with the weathering. To this point I have used only artist oil paints. I first did a light wash of raw umber on the trucks, frame, fuel tank, pilots, step wells, and frame sides. After that I used a technique a buddy of mine uses on aircraft models. I mixed artist oils with cigarette lighter fluid (Ronsonol) and sprayed the entire model with my airbrush. After I let it dry for an hour or two, I came back and removed most of the weathering from the hood sides with q-tips with tiny amounts of mineral spirits. I did this a couple of times with just a very thin misting of paint. First browns and then white mixed with yellow ocre. The results are what you see here. Really dirty on the bottom with relatively clean hood sides. I still have a bit more weathering to go and then I will put the handrails on. I'll post more pics when I get done with that step.

Wow Charlie...this engine is really coming to life! I look forward to seeing it completed. All the extra detail work really paid off...as did the re-paint after the decal issue.

Thanks guys. And thanks for everyone's patience. I never expected this build to drag out for 3 years (and counting). I have learned a lot from this one though. The most important lesson I take away from it is to build the drive first. I just began by hacking away at a shell three years ago without any firm plans how to mount it on a drive and power it. That turned out to be a huge mistake because the scale coupler pockets really complicated things. Randy- I still have some weathering to do so I will get some diesel soot up on the turbo stack. I'm also going to have some fuel stains on the fuel tank just below the fillers. There is some work left on the trucks too. They need some rust streaks on the sideframes and grease stains on the journals. I have read that some guys like to use Tamiya Smoke for that so I'll give it a try. I have started on the handrails. This is by far my least favorite part of any hood unit build. Brian Banna has written about using Athearn plastic handrail stanchions drilled out for brass wire. That is what I plan to do here as well. Things are getting busy around the house with Christmas right around the corner. I don't know how much time I will have to work on trains in the coming weeks so I don't expect to get much done until 2014. If this is my last post until then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Years.
