Progress so far. The body work is pretty well complete, ready for the paint shop. Heres a couple showing the pilot detail. Now, I'm going to start working on the chassis (Athearn BB SD9). Dan

Here's a shot of the Athearn BB SD9 chassis that I'll be using. I've already done some clean-up work on it and some cutting/filing on the truck bolsters and frame so that it would fit into the scale width SD30 body. Here is after I've added styrene to the end of the fuel tank and filled the gap between the two tanks. Here it is after painting it black. I used Detail Associates #3203 15" Air reservoir, but I had to sand/file them to about 2/3rd's of their thickness so that they would fit up under the SD30's walkway. I also had to remove some of the frame above the fuel tank area, I took it back even with the opening for the truck area. Here are a couple of shots showing the completed chassis. I used a Digitrax DH150K decoder and hard-wired it in. The only thing left to do for the chassis is to paint the truck sideframes silver. Dan

OH POOP Just tried to set the shell on the chassis, and found that the motor decoder combo is to TALL. It won't let the shell sit all the way down. So it looks like I need to replace one of them, right now I'm thinking motor. With a can-motor I should get enough reduction in height so that the shell will fit. Dan

Athearn motors were always a little bigger than they need to be.

Complete Chassis: Part 2 Here is the chassis after I replaced the Athearn motor with a Tan-Can motor from an old GSB SD40-2. I also got around to painting the truck sideframes silver. The sideframes are a set from an Athearn SD9 that I filed the cast brake cylinders off of and replaced with separately molded ones. p.s. The body fits now. ;D Dan

Mounting the body to chassis. I glued 4 styrene blocks to the body and then drilled the chassis at these locations. I will be using 4 screws to hold them togther. Dan

Coupler mounting. I built-up the area with 1/4" square styrene, after re-enforcing the body to walkway joint with styrene angle. I then mounted Kadee #22 couplers. Dan

Is it going into Southern paint? Stephen, Since this is an imagineered unit, I don't feel right right painting it for a real RR. At first I thought about painting it up for my Minnesota International Ry, but decided against that because the MI is strictly a GE road. I then went with my private leasing company DRLX ( Dan Raitz Leasing), and this is the scheme that I came up with. Dan

WOW, that looks nice!!! I tried something similar in the past, placing the shell on an old Atlas/Roco SD24 drive. Over time (I must have built the thing 15 years ago at least), the body work has cracked (I wasn't as skilled back then to top it off), but your result looks great.
The paint job is also very nice. I like bright colored locomotives.
