Good morning all- I am working on a set of mining locomotives for the Oliver Iron Mining Co, later Division, of US Steel. These were based out of the Great North Woods up here in Minnesota. The Oliver had a liking for cow calf units as they had the EMD TR-6 as well as the only cow calf units from both Baldwin and Alco. I am building a TR-6 set, but a have a couple of quick questions about the SW-8, the base unit in the TR-6 set. Since these units worked in the mines at times directly next to a shovel, there was some shielding that was placed over the radiators. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1015537My question regarding the radiators is was the top screens the same size between the SW-9/1200 and the SW-8? I am starting with an Athearn cow calf set and I would like to try and use the Precision Scale Co. #585-3918 radiator shutters as the top piece with a frame built up underneath. Do you think this is a viable idea? Thanks, Todd Monroe

Well, I was side tracked with the TR-6 build and instead I am working on a TR-2 build. I friend sent me a set of Athearn SW-7 cow-calf units that were ready for paint. Instead, we changed them into the NW-2 cow-calf units by changing out the radiator grills front and top, and building a new set of hand rails.
Bare with me, I will try to get a few attachments included.
The OIM TR-6's are hopefully next.
Thanks, Todd

These are actually going to end up as CGW maroon and black units. The OIM aren't far behind though.

The top screens on the SW-8, SW-600, and SW-900 all were shorter in length than the SW-7, SW-9 and SW-1200. Not as big a radiator was needed for the lower horsepower. The grill on the front contained the actual fan, and the radiators themselves were under the upper screens. Well, here is an update on where I am with the engines. I started working on a set of TR-6 Oliver units, but they have been shelved until I get a set of CGW TR-2's done for a friend.
These shots are right before final prime and paint.

I am finally done with the CGW TR-2's. I ended up shotting them with a gloss coat as I had a decal come lose. Unfortunately, I was hoping the clear coat would dry clear on the windows as I put an interior in.

Its been a while since my last update, but now that the CGW untis are done and out of the way, I have been back at the Oliver units. I need to add a few more details, but I have the calf unit preety much complete. The hand rails are on it now.

Doing the hand rails was very easy. The mounts on the frame are nothing more than c-channel.
I made the handrails out of .020 brass that I bent with a needle nose pliers. I used the bottom teeth to hold the wire and eyed it up from there.
Soildering was also very easy, easier than you'd think. All I did was put the flux on the end of the upright and then on the handrail. Then I make sure there is a little tinon the end of the iron and lick the joint with the soldering iron.
The radiator shutters are simply siding.
