SD40 Build x 2

My next project is two SD40’s more specifically SD40U and SD40-3. Both will be riding on a modified Athern RTR frame.

I meant to ask what was the purpose for the roof overhangs behind the cab? I'm assuming its not just to protect the crew from weather lol

The roof extensions are snow shields to keep snow from the central air intake.

yes those are snow shields.

here are some more pictures, one of the units will have the Genesis flexicoil trucks which are very nice but more trouble then they are worth to get them to work with the rtr frame. I learned my lesson and the second unit will receive the rtr flexicoil trucks. The long hood and walkways are Kato. 6918 will have a reproduction Bowser cab and the SD40U not really sure on the road number yet but would have a shapeways cab. Unfortunately after receiving the cab it had a lot of print lines all over it so I'm just using the front of it basically just the area with windshields and door, this was than attached to an Athearn cab.

Thanks, the pilots are slightly modified Athern Genesis 4 step and Bowser 3 step pilots.

That’s great looking work. What was used for the sand lines on the under frame?

Thanks, the sanding lines are spares from ScaleTrains SD40-2 parts kit. Unfortunately they interfere with the trucks too much, I had to replace them with 36 gauge flexible wire it worked out much better and still looks good.

A bit more progress, I started to paint all the parts.

It’s been a while but I’m back working on the SD40’s. Adding decals and making Dofasco sideframes.

6918 is Finished, 6027 Is almost done as well just needs railings.
