Started another project, this time its BC Rail RS-18 #630. Here's a shot of what I've built up so far, I'm waiting for a box from Atlas with some RS-36 bodies and I've got to order some more parts. Basic model is a Proto RS-18 with the Kaslo RS18 low nose kit -Trevor

What are you going to do about the different hood heights between the Hobbycraft and Atlas shells? -Cross that bridge when I get to it, maybe with some styrene stips under the Hobbycraft shell to raise the height. I really won't know how bad the difference is until I get the Atlas hood ready to fit. More fun and games.... -Trevor

More work: The Atlas RS36 hoods arrived today, but as you can see I forgot to order the top of the DB section! The styrene strips at the back of the walkway are for raising the height of the RS-18 hood section to match the RS-36 section. The horn is from Miniatures by Eric and the bell is from a Kato SD40-2. I removed the metal where the fuel tank is so I can add a tank from an RS-27 (hopefully Walthers stocks the parts!) I've got to remove the rear battery boxes as well as both pilots. I'm also planning on using truck side frames from the RS-27. -Trevor

The cab front is a Kaslo piece, I had to carve off the entire front wall of the cab (engineer and conductors door and windows) and do some sanding to make the part fit. The hood height difference wasn't that bad, I still have to modify some of the hood doors behind the cab, and build some rear cab steps. All and all, the project is coming along nicely, thanks to all for the positive comments! -Trevor

Your project is coming along nicely. I see you will have to shim the rear of the hood to get it to match. The joys of kitbashing! Nice work!

Progress on the rear, the double rear headlight was replaced with a Details Associates barrel headlight that I recessed far enough into the shell to resemble the BCR light. The top lights are also from DA. The factory Proto pilots have been removed and replaced with Kaslo pilots. The Kadee coupler helps to hold the pilot in alignment while the CA sets -Trevor

Looks okay to me. Were the hoods recessed into the walkways like the Stewart C628/630s are?

Thanks guys, I chose the Proto RS-18 because its the only RS-18 out there (other then the Kaslo RS18u kit) and it has pretty nice detail and no a lot of molded on parts. The door handles seem a little oversize but I can always replace them. Years ago I built a CP RS-18u and a "normal" RS-18 using the Atlas RS-11 and Miniatures by Eric corner pieces, wow talk about a lot of time and effort to fill in those hood notches! The Proto RS-18 has the proper rear end of the long hood, even though the hood height is too low, I felt that I could modify it and come up with a decent model. To answer Randy's question, the long hood sits flush with the walkway and was held to there by some small plastic tabs. After cutting the hood apart, the tabs really didn't do anything (and were glued to the walkway by the factory workers!) so I will have to glue everything to the walkways at a later date. -Trevor

Project update, or as I like to put it, things get a little complex...
After modifying the Proto RS-18 frame for the RS-27 fuel tank and Kaslo short hood, I really wasn't left with much metal. The motor mounts had to be removed when the old fuel tank was cut out, and I really didn't feel like building something to hold the motor. I did manage to pick up an undec RS-27 on ebay for $40, which leads me to the next step. I've decided not to use the Proto RS-18 frame and drive, rather I'm mounting the shell and walkway on the RS-27 drive, this way I'll get the fuel tank and air tanks that I need, plus I can use the proto trucks and excellent side frames. The only major mod I have to do is I need to mill out a portion of the Kaslo low hood to accommodate the front truck gear tower (taller on the RS-27 model). So after its all said and done I'm using an RS-18, RS-27 and RS-36 components to build a BCR RS-18. How's the saying go again? Nothing's easy? I'll throw some photos up soon. -Trevor

The RS-18 has some funky hood doors under the front air intake, so i had to modify the stock RS-36 doors. In the 1st shot you can see the section I removed from the hood and replaced with a sheet of .020 styrene. There is a piece of .010 styrene behind this, which gives me the recess I need to fit the Cannon hood doors 2nd shot shows 2 of the modified Cannon EMD doors added, the cut out on the right had door is for the filters I have to add. Finally all 4 doors are added, the filters are Andy W. Scale models C425 air intakes with one filter panel removed. The notch on the bottom right had corner will be covered by a step box. -Trevor

That's interesting. I like the solution to the doors.

More progress: I'm almost at the stage where I can prime this thing, I do have to add a couple of step lights and maybe pre bend some handrails. The treadplate is some Railflyer stuff I robbed from a couple of different sets, and cut it to fit. The difference in door handle height is bugging me so I plan to move a couple down to line up with the rest. -Trevor
