This is a build of a Walther's Bay Window Caboose kit. Of COURSE they stopped producing them (because it's a KIT!). I got a great deal on EvilBay several months ago on it, and hope to get more. It's pretty nice for a plastic kit! Won't win any rivet counting awards, but comes with enough optional parts, to build a C-50-2, C-50-4, C-50-5, and various phases within... And can also do versions of Southern, PRR, NYC, and B&O, with 3 different bay window assemblies and some other gear included. Being a lifetime Espee fan, I'm doing "sort of" a C-50-4. Being that my Railroad, the Pacific Belt RR, is my freelance creation, some creative license will be taken!! First steps are rudimentary (and I forgot to take pics!). So about the fourth step, I painted the roof with silver, rattle can enamel.

The kit comes with OK trucks, but I chose to use Genesis Caboose trucks, with belt driven generator, AND spinning bearing caps! What can I say - I'm a sucker for a good gimmick!!! Besides, Cabeese are pretty high profile items, so why not spinning bearings, and a fairly well molded generator. Besides that, they give 8-wheel electrical pickup, which is great for lighting!

Since it's getting lighting, it's also getting a half decent interior... Starting with interior walls, to hide the window glazing glue flaps! My railroad's colors are C&EI Orange and MRL Blue. The Cabeese are mostly Orange... These are the bay window options... YES you can get better etched brass ends.... but I'm pretty poor, and the Walther's castings are fairly nice for a production kit! It DOES come with wire handrails... And here's my low tech method of holding them, to paint them Yellow. Also, you can see where I started "rusting" the roof. I used a two part patina kit from Triangle Finishes, that includes an Iron impregnated paint, and a solution, applied after the paint dries, that makes it REALLY RUST!! Here it is, being applied to the underframe details... This stuff WORKS!! Sold in most Craft Stores.

Working underneath, I got the brake gear in... I bent air lines from .016 brass rod (because I was out of .010), and .020 for the brake actuating rods. I also found a Tichy brake fulcrum, and "made it fit"! I then gave it a quick coat of rust colored enamel, from a paint pen from a rail weathering kit. Then, I got the window holes on the interior walls roughly cut out... And found a light "earth tone" to paint them! Also shown, is the Detail Associates Prime A/C unit, that's being mounted on the roof... My crews are a little SPOILED, at the Pacific Belt RR!!!

Back to the interior... I used Evergreen styrene for 90% of it. I'm calling this a reasonable facsimile of an interior, but trying to do the best I can, with what I've got! The seating. Seat and desk. The floor, with cutout for the weights. I wanted the weights on the BOTTOM of the Caboose, because this is a runner, not a showpiece... I've got to figure out a "creative" solution to work that weight in! Here's the floor, sitting on the frame, temporarily... The closet and the "head", are where the wiring to the ceiling will go through. Like I said, reasonable, far from exact! Here's one of the ends, painted, brake chain installed, and "rusted". The Air Conditioner installed, and most of the decals applied. I used .016 brass wire, to represent freon lines... This also gives a good view, of the different levels and hues of rust, that the patina kit produces. There's NO other weathering on the roof, except for the Triangle Finishes two part patina! I drilled two holes through the frame and weight for the truck wires. Here, you can get a better look at the Genesis trucks... Installed micro plugs on the truck wires, in case I may have to remove the body... I soldered them to the wires, instead of the usual press fit. Then shrink wrap. You never know.... Another closer look at the generator, on the Genesis truck. I feel like many MRR items have been grossly overpriced lately, but THESE are worth the $19.95!! That's all for now.... Hopefully, I'll have more soon. I'm looking for a CHEAP (or free!!) SMD bridge rectifier, so I can run this on DCC. LEDs don't like AC power, in any form!

FINISHING UP!!! I did some rudimentary interior, using cut strip styrene... ... Including a ZZZZZZ scale Layout, for the Conductor, so he wouldn't whine!! For the lighting, I used a LED strip, with a bridge rectifier soldered on, for use on my DCC layout! I did most of the underside weathering with a patina kit, that "grows" REAL rust on anything - even plastic!! I thought it worked well. Also for the needy Conductor - a 55 gallon jug of VINO!! And a couple of glory shots over my Canyon! Thanks for Looking!!!

Might have to get some decals from you Yea noticed but i look at the whole pic I just read this again.... You need decals FROM me?? My ONLY reservation to that is, the prints my buddy did for me look... for lack of better word... "dotty"! For some reason, looking closely, the lettering looks like a series of dots. I was just grateful to get my Railroad, in white - for a fraction of what Rail Graphics wanted!!
