Hi Folks, Well as promised here is some pictures of my very first project I am working on. It's an Athearn 9-44CW in early 90's pre-merger Santa Fe Red and Silver War Bonnet, number 600. It started out as a standard G.E. wide cab and I am in the process of converting it to a G.E. Gull Wing cab. It also has 5 steps which I will need to convert to a 4 step version. The first Santa Fe order had 4 steps and the later ones had 5 steps. If anyone has any tips on how to convert the steps from 5 to 4, I welcome any suggestions ;D I am using an A-Line/ PPW photo etch steps. I also have a A-Line PPW Frame/Chassis, Athearn 3 Axel power trucks and a Mashima can motor to power it. I started out by using a Dremmel tool to remove the side roof sections on each side, then corrected the profiles to the gull wing shape using .020 styrene, and various putties (still working on that but it is coming out OK so far I think). I am also learning to use a double action Air Brush. So far I have Grab Irons on some of the cab and primed the shell. I also have the Details West parts kits. Not sure what side frames to use yet. Well that is pretty much what I have so far, if you have any suggestions or tips please feel free to share. I will continue to take my time and work a little each day. I welcome any help or suggestions you have for a first timer ;D PS: Thank you Paul for taking the pictures for me! Thanks for looking! Teresa ;D

600-649 had different trucks than 650-699. The only dash-9 side frames that I know of that will fit the Athearn trucks is the Athearn side frames. They will need some modification to be correct for number 600. When you reference prototype photos you will want make sure you are using pre merger photos as the trucks started getting modified and sometimes changed out around 96 or 97. Below is closeup pic from June of 95 showing the correct truck style. The most noticeable difference between that truck and the Athearn truck is that big bump on the side frame between the first and second axle. That should be an easy mod for someone that can modify that cab roof. Now for the steps I just leave them alone and over look it. To me this is one of those places that you have to take in consideration durability. Also, I hope you do not mind me pointing this out, the corner grab on top of nose should the one piece style like in the pic above. Hope this helps.

Since you're using an Athearn chassis you'll have to modify, but has anyone ever tried to covert the Katos to an Athearn? Katos are correct.......

Rick On this first project , I gave Teresa an old C44-9 shell she could strip, a Rail power chassis , Athearn trucks, and stock Athearn side frames, Mashima can motor etc.. She bought the detail parts etc. after deciding she really liked the ATSF units. Originally she wanted to keep it simple and cheap ;D Sound familiar guys? we all start out that way... I think considering the complexity of this first project and how much she has to learn to pull it off half way decently shes doin a great job. I've taught her to cast resin parts with me in the past, so if she can make one good "master" for the "bump" on the side frames, well make the "bumps" out of resin and she can glue them on and putty them in. First off, Welcome to the forum! It’s just great to have yet another ATSF modeler on here! Here’s a great tip – don’t listen to Glenn H. regarding his love for the Monkeys Running Loose railroad or the long forgotten line that ran the green pickles and twinkies. His real love lies with the ATSF. Just troll around on a few of his older threads and you’ll see proof! ;D Congrats for jumping in to your first major project, best of luck to you and be sure to post more pics as you go along. Here’s another pic of a member of the 600 class – I took this just a few months after it was delivered. (See my PBase site for more ATSF stuff. ATSF 90 also has lots of great mid 90’s ATSF pics too.)

You've really picked quite the project as an introduction to model railroading. It took me a while in the hobby to start whacking up body shells. From the pictures you've posted it looks like you'll have no problems completing this engine and you'll have trackage rights over the SP in no time. Welcome to the Detailer.

I feel bad for you now.. you are going to listen to Sammy and Eric for help.. ;D I will save the MRL blue and black for you for another project. Don't beleive anything Sammy says. When he comes to our show in a few weeks he has promised to bring his BN and MRL models that he thinks nobody knows about. He is the president of the "BN lovers of Oklahoma", Tulsa chapter. He loves St Patricks day as he can dress up in all BN green for the whole day. Hoover
