Here's the latest addition to my friend's BNSF fleet. It's an old Athearn BB dummy with the full compliment of details. The stock Athearn steel handrails were used, but I really don't think that they took too much away from the overall model. I also fabricated the secondary GPS system behind the octagonal GPS using bits of styrene, DW small dome, and some nut/washer castings. The cab was also modified with DW's BNSF/NS 4 window cab set...........WHAT A PAIN!!!! Of course, it was the first time using the kit, and I chalk it up to a learning experience. The owner likes his locos a little dirtier, but he actually found a pretty dirty pic of this unit......... thanks for looking, and comments welcome...... Rick www.fourrocksmodelworks.com

Would look great parked on a fuel rack thats for sure, but can I ask, is a dummy loco worthy of such great details? It would be a static display on my layout if I had one.

Rick could always MU this unit with his warbonnets and nobody would be the wiser... ;D
EDIT: rick's buddy could.... ive been toying with the idea of picking up a bunch of dummy diesels to modify... all of mine are powered, and thats just fewer diesels i can buy at once...

I beleive my friend only had this single dummy(all others are powered) , and it was already un-numbered. Of course that didn't matter because I had to repaint the cab anyway after installing the 4-window sides. He said he planned on running it one of two DPUs on one of his trains. I've only got one dummy, and without having a layout, I have to question my sanity.

That looks really nice. One question for you, did the window glass come with the cab kit? It really adds to the model.

I was a bit surprised myself, but maybe DW will see this and correct it? (yeah right!) The styrene was hand cut and installed. Rick www.fourrocksmodelworks.com

The big dome to the right is for the radio antennas not just GPS. The small round one behind it is the GPS dome. Those were made from pix we sent to DW. Is that a small skate antenna in front of the small dome?

I had always assumed the octagonal domes were GPS, so I was wondering why they'de mount another one directly begind it. Nope, no other antennas, just styrene "blocks" to build up so definition. Rick

Back in the day the BNSF Dash 9s only had one large (radio) & one small (DPU) antenna. Did/does Hi-Tech details make the large dome?

Hey Rick,
I'm going back through the archives looking at -9 projects to see how others have handled the cab. I want to know about the front windows. The Athearn windows are square in the corners. In the pictures you have here the corners seem rounded off. Did you do that by adding styrene in the corner, did the DW kit have something,... I have decided that I'd like to make all these mods on my -9s when I do them, except for maybe the one I did a while ago.
