Here are a few shots of the first one of my units - using it as a learning unit for the other two units I have actually so it's a bit of a mess right now. Need to clean it up somewhat but it was a good learning experience for the other two I have planned. The cab is not permanently attached yet. I may be able to add air tanks in the screened section behind the cab although I'll have to wait until I get ready to mount the drive to see what kind of room is available. These are 'in progress' photos. I have to find some better lighting to show this though. I'll post as soon as I can get this done.     The brass-colored piece that runs horizontal under the walkways comes with the detail kit to fill the void left by the old stamped handrals. Had some time this weekend so I thought I'd get started. Been procrastinating for a while. Still looking for a source for the cooling radiators on the top aft of the boxy filter behind the cab. See the drawing and the prototype photo below.   Would appreciate your thoughts and comments. |

This is the Rivarrossi U25C shell from the late '60s / early '70s. A bit of history with this - the shell and trucks sideframes are exeptional even by today's standards, except that everything was cast on. The drive stunk though and there have been several attempts to repower it. Longer story short, I started the U25C group on Yahoo groups.yahoo.com/group/u25cproject/ that succeeded in convincing Kaslo to introduce the repower kit and offer some details by Plano. Kaslo plans to introduce thier own body shell too, unless those plans have changed. |

Great work so far. I remember Allen McClelland had a few U25Cs on his roster, and you can see them in the videos.

Maybe I should clarify somewhat. The old shell had everything cast on, including the ladder on the fireman's side at the rear. Everything you see here that is gold, silver or copper colored comes from the Plano detail kit sold by Kaslo except for the exhaust stack, the sand filler hatch and the gyralite. I removed lots of plastic on this shell - the top boxy filter 'hole'; the cast on exhaust stack; the screened door 'holes' behind the cab; the top of the radiator; and the sides of the radiator. The cab is a early U-Boat thinwall cab from Hi-Tech (the one I have on there was a test assembly, not my best work).
What remains is extensive. The Plano details include cab widows details, lift rings, handrail stanchions, etc. There is a serious amount of work remaining - not to mention mounting the truck side frames on the gear towers somehow. Then there will be DCC and all that other stuff that I am having to learn having been out of the hobby for so long.

Very nice work! As for the oil cooler, your going to have to scratch build them. The Rock Island used a similar one on their E and F units and I've looked far and wide for a model of them with out luck. I scratchbuilt some out of styrene and brass for my Rock Island AB6 project. Thanks John - I kind of figured that I'd have the scratch-build that oil cooler. Do you have detail photos or drawings of the ones you built? They look to be similar if not the same ones. Any help would be appreciated.

Any help would be appreciated. Unfortunately, I can't take very good closeups with my old digital camera. This is the best I could do.  The cooling fins were made from .080x.080 styrene, cut to length. I drill a hole through them and used .030 or .040 (can't remember which) brass rod for the plumping. I represented the fins by scoring the styrene with an X-acto blade. You ca'nt see it in the pics, but it shows up in person. The brackets are made from strips of brass. The drawings you showed have the "fins" running in the wrong direction, at least for the Rock Island. The fins should run parallel with the pipes, not across them.    John |

Just lost one on the auction site went for $30 |

Found some air cooling coils from Details West #CC-318. Just another piece of the puzzle might have been found.
