Arrived home from the Cocoa Beach RPM show.
Cannon & Co. - COMING SOON! (at least that is what the sign said)
Hood sides. Laser cut and they were absolutely awesome! Dave had on display I think the GP39-2 sides. He mentioned that he needs to simply fine tune the laser offset and he is good to go. They looked great as they were. Made from 0.020" styrene with all the cutouts to simply drop Cannon & Co. parts into. Snug fit like they should be. Just back it with another 0.020" sheet and glue the parts in. This is from the back of the cab to the long hood end and has the electrical room seperation line. I do not have any photos, but I am sure they will be up soon on a pbase site. Really cool stuff. I have no idea what his first side offering will be though. Naturally thinking about the whole modeling picture I had to encouraged him to do a complete locomotive kit with pilots, decks, side sills and such. But of course, the hood sides are a start and I think a very good and promising one.
This really should get modelers who are on the fence or a bit intimidated about building hood sides to have no reason now to build your own. All the work is done for you. I am definitely going to give one a try. Maybe some Copper Basin GP39-2's if those are the first released.

The only sides he brought in for the show, were GP39-2. From talking to him, He can do any side. Once the file is generated, Dave said it only takes a couple minutes to cut it. But his sign said COMING SOON!

Nice Idea from Cannon!!!!! I gave up waiting for those "Canadian Company Parts" awhile ago. I can see it now...GP39-2's, GP49's, GP59's with no more slicing and dicing (and they would be accurate too)!!! I hope these come to fruition soon!!!!!

I'll just hold off on my GP59 for now then. This has possibly come at the right time, I had just decided to make my own sides from C&C parts!

oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!!!! This is going to be extra cool if the GP39-2 comes first as I have a '39 project I'd gladly use this for. And Brian, my project could benefit from yours should you do a '39 than has Kennecott heritage (think fuel tank). The one I want to do has that heritage, I've tweaked some stuff on an Atlas Trainman one but would be certainly willing to examine the new option.

I have said it before on this forum. Starting from when I got my Hi-Tech details SD39 sides I knew that the pre-molded "sides" idea was an ingenious one. Bout time somebody caught on, especially Dave with all the Cannon & Co parts to add to them. Bravo!! This is something we all can seriously benefit from. Thank god EMD hoods are mostly modular too!

could a bb gp50 be used as a platform for these gp39-2 sides. i have 10 gp50's that don't fit my plans but the gp39-2 does. They will be a perfect base for the 39-2 as they are the same length and if you model the later phase Santa Fe and BN units they use the late GP40/GP50 style anti-climber.

Proabably from Dave Hussey. He usually goes around and takes photos and puts them up on pbase. If I see it or anyone else does, post it here for all to see. I guess the best thing to do is email Cannon & Co. and put in your suggestion for what sides you want. Let him know how interested you are and that you are supporting this effort.

I just saw dave pbase site, no pics of the new cannon parts. I will email him and see what he needs to proceed with making sides for what I need.

Not to steal the thread, but I have a desire to do an ILSX GP39-2. It's originally a Kennecott unit. I had started this model thinking it was a simple dip job with gold lettering, then I started to notice all the subtle oddities that I've come to learn made it a chop nose (and cab) KCCX unit.

Geez, let me get home. I appreciate all the interest in the new laser cut sides. I took advantage of the meet to essentially make a pre announcement before I was ready for a full roll out. Thanks Brian for getting the word out.
What I had at Cocoa Beach were two versions of GP39-2s that I had already drawn in AutoCad that I took to the distributor for the laser cutter to test the concept with some styrene, before I made the purchase of the machine. The test was successful and I pulled the trigger on the purchase. The machine has been built and is suppose to be delivered this week. I still need to find space in the shop for it and need to buy and hook up an exhaust system to vent the fumes to the outside.
So between the backlog of direct and distributor orders that came in while I was in Cocoa Beach that will require some parts to be shot and packed and my part time job (two days a week at the company I retired from), it will take me a couple weeks before I ready to learn how it use the machine and make the necessary setting adjustments to get the best results. I'll then make official announcements and be able to start offering some parts.
My intent is to make these parts available direct only through the web site, in order to keep the costs reasonable and be more reactive to requests.
As for my pBase pictures from the meet, I should get them up by the weekend.
Thanks again for the interest
