I finished this model today and have just ordered one from Shapeways. If it works, I'm going to build a recabbed NS SD40-2, and offer them to others for sale. It will take about three weeks for the cab to get here, so I'll post pictures when it arrives. Adam

Heck, you could probably make a killing off of the cab itself. Looks very good

Why oh why did you have to do this just as I had decided to make one of these from styrene! Now I have the conundrum of seeing what you come up with or continuing... LOL Love to see the the results of this but I may press on anyway, see how I get on.

OK guys, keep in mind the material that Adam is printing in will most likely be too rough to make it viable as anything other than a test shot. I've run boxcar sides in 3D using shapeways and the materials are too rough for HO, but I made an awesome 3D template to use to make a styrene master from...
The technology is a mere year or two off (or maybe they're there now, I haven't tried their new FDP plastic) from being perfect for us.
Adam has the ability to host the model on the Shapeways site, but y'all have to go there yourselves to buy them...and it puts a few cents in his wallet when you do it!

How rough we talking? Will a sanding stick take it down enough? I mean is it completely unuseable?

Sean is right, it is rough. You will need more than a sanding stick.
I have had a number of things made at shapeways and I am not at all impressed. Lots of printing lines. I tried something as simple as a fuel tank. Totally useless. I even used their ultra fine material. The print lines were so heavy that it was a waste of time to try and salvage them.
3D printing is a great idea, but not refined enough for what we need it for. I did find a much better shop in Wisconsin, but it was big time expensive. I had some N-scale stuff done. Some fan housings. Four fans for $100. We are talking not even enough material that would equal one Cannon HO scale fan assemy. But the printing was much finer and better. This cab would probably cost over $500 to get done.

It's the way of the future, the technology just needs to improve a bit Within the next two to five years I'd expect to see someone printing an entire locomotive.

It's here! It's a little rough, like some of you said, but not so much that it wouldn't be usable. I would still really like it a lot smoother, though. I'm looking into another printing service that would probably get it a lot smoother; that being said this was a GREAT test part to check window fit. Unfortunately, I have some changes to make before they're ready to go. That and doing the Athearn version still. Don't worry, we'll get there! iomalley- Not to disagree with what you said, but what's the difference if there's a profit on a model sold through shapeways and a model I physically mail myself?
