Nope, not Russian, it's a nickname that somehow followed me from Bombardier Learjet to Union Pacific, it's never the cool ones that stick...
Years ago I was programming some flight phone numbers on a Learjet and didn't have the time to get it done that night so the follow on day shift had to do it, somehow the paper I left the numbers on mysteriously grew legs and walked away from where I left them and whenn that shift inquired who had the numbers the customer service rep stated she had given them to "A Fat Russian Guy", I have no idea why she thought I was russian. Anyway it stuck and it's easy for me to remember so I use it from time to time.

Made a slight change in what units will get the AZ centennial scheme. The first unti I am working on is going to be #500. It is an SD40-2 with an 88" nose. The second and third unit, #501 & #502, will be ex UP snoots renumbered 1912 and 2012 and they will get the AZ centennial scheme.
My reason for this is that I simply want a true CSRy unit in full working regalia.

CSRy will soon be taking delivery of its third piece of equipement. An ex UP SD40T-2. It will receive number 509. While waiting to be shopped and painted it will get CSRy stencils and numbers.
I'll put a decoder and speaker in it and weather it a bit. It will run this way untill I am ready to shop it.

I have not sat down yet to detail that. It will be 10 GP35's rebuilt into GP38-2's though. Like what Utah Railway did. heritage though is unknown yet. Some will be SP, some will be D&RGW and a mix bag of others. They will be run in two unit sets coupled back to back.
In a couple days, CSRy will be taking delivery of an ex SP/KCS SD40T-2.

Are some of those engines going to be in rough shape? Maybe a LEO to test on the CSRy someday? Just messing with you Brian. Looks like alot of work ahead of you with what you have right now..

Anthony,
A three unit set of LEO's is in the future. They will be for my freelanced lease fleet. Your concept is very attractive. I like it a lot and want a few to run on a group layout. Its not a club, just a large group of modelers who setup every now and then. Maybe a coal train or something.
Yes, definitley something I WANT to build. I'll probably even do the decals with Microscale. I just like the sold colors Microscale produces. I do nto like ALPs printed decals. Hey, I have room still on the sheet I am making. Can you send me a copy of the artwork so I can do that?

No need, I already did it. The only one I did nto do is the EPA symbol. I do nto find it necessary. I have the LEO and CAT logos done. I just need to size them. If you can. please send me height and width of each.

Brian, I have to step in about the decals. Jim Abbott at Highball Graphics uses a later Kodak printer system that corrected some of the issues with the ALPS versions. Also, Jim uses a sealant on his decals so they do not degrade. I have had several different people print decals for me over the years, but Jim by far surpasses anything I have seen. Unless it is an odd color, the print is very good... This is a recent project he did for me... Note the colors

How about one of the wire grille ex-UPs being an ex-Fast Forty, with the two-step nose? Would be a little different...
UP had a lot of SD40-2 variations. My employer has picked up a few.
4010: Early model, 81" nose 4030: Ex-Fast Forty, nose chopped to 81" by WSOR. 4007: 1977 built, snoot chopped (had wheel handbrake) 4008: 1978 built, snoot chopped. No Q-fans yet. 4011: 1980 built, Q-fans, silencer, bulge.
The cab interiors are different as well. After 1975-ish there should be little doors under the number boards for changing out the number board lights. Before then the doors were inside the cab.

georgiaroad,
I have no doubt the highball Graphics decals are top quality. If I was ONLY doing black and white, I would definitley use his service. I have had decals done by Jim in the past for some N-Scale and I was very happy with the quality. He uses extremely thin film which is GREAT also. I have also used his Penn Central hopper decals and really liked them a lot. It is colors other than black and white that bother me. You CAN see the lines and or dots. The MP15 that I am workingon now haqs some HG custom decals on it. The RA at teh back end is a HG decal. it looks great, but I can see the print lines. Albeit they are very hard to see, nevertheless, I see them. I know MS charges a lot more and you have to get a rediculous number of them in one run, but I really want my decals to have solid opaque colors. I am only going to get them made once and I want them to be perfect. I have approximately 8 colors on my sheet.
Your decals do look fantastic for your roadrailer fleet, The lines are very crisp and sharp. Although I can see the blue is slightly transparent. If I decide to do a boxcar fleet for my road, I will definitley use HG for them. They only need to be white.
Mike, what is a "two-step" nose? Sounds interesting.

The 'dither' or 'banding' that you see on the decals are a result of the colour mix that the printer interprets. Its inherent in both the alps and kodak dye sub printers.
If you have a custom road, it may be as simple as adjusting the colours slightly to reduce or eliminate the dither. I went thru this with the VIA F40PH decal sets I did 10 years ago, and even though the VIA logo matched an official colour chip, it had heavy dots visible in it, so I adjusted it maybe 2% and the dots disappeared to a consistent, blended safety yellow.

Yes, the "dither" is what I do not want. If I was printing my own, I could play around with it. But I do not think HG will do that. He would have to print, adjust, print, adjust until the dither is not noticed.
BTW Sean, very nice models! I reaqlly liked the CN SD40.

It could be as simple as a mosaic of tiles, each with minute changes, on a sheet with a number associated, and pick the right number. it need'nt be a back and forth endeavour...
I could set up a sheet for you if you had a colour in mind.

Brian nice to see you adding a couple 45-2 to the mix. I like those a lot. Weathering I believe is what makes a model complete now-a-days. It is a form of detailing just not with parts. Can't wait to see more.

Copper State Railway will soon be taking delivery of unit #507 & #508 (thank you Bob). Two Q-equipped SD40-2.
I now will have 6 of the twelve units on the roster. That being 500, 501, 502, 507, 508 & 509.

Hey Brian, since some of your -2's may be ex Union Pacific units, how about one of their last SD40-2's. Their 4 SD40-2S models with the longer radiator compartment. 8 radiator doors instead of 7 and of course a longer radiator the same length as the SD50S models that went to NW a month later. Here is my modified Kato SD40-2S model. The radiator top is from an Athearn SD50.
