It's been a looong time since I posted any kind of project, so I thought I would show a cheap build that I just started on. It is a Walthers H10-44 that I purchased with a damaged cab. After searching for a replacement cab and being unable to find one, I thought I would build a Cannon SW cab and try it to see if it looked right. How 'bout that...it looks like it was made for it! Even the door lined up with the walkway. It did take a little bodywork to fit, but I think it works well for a shop rebuild. That is what it is, you know! I will be adding a Digitrax decoder, just a minimal amount of details and I'll paint it for my Trinity River & Western. When complete, I'll have around $60 in it. Not bad. I still can't decide if I want to close in the FM exhaust and install 2 EMD stacks to make it a complete rebuild.

I think some purists might have a heart attack, but go ahead and add those EMD stacks! Claim you bought it for a song off a scrapper who'd just sold the old F-M diesel to a rebuilder.

After a little work on it Friday, here is what it looks like now. Still a few things to do, such as more work on the exhaust stack cover, but I'm pretty happy with it now. The handrails are Smokey Valley stanchions and Tichy phosphor bronze wire. I've had these stanchions for at least 20 years, so I thought I would use them to make some full length railings. I started to use the original short side railings and end railings that came with the H10-44, but I just couldn't bring myself to use railings the size of sewer pipes! Since the cab and stanchions are EMD prototypes, I went ahead and added EMD stacks to complete the EMDification of the old FM! As it sits, including the stanchions and soon-to-be-added couplers, I will end up with a total cost of under $70.

What time period are you modeling? If this thing is late-70s onward, you would want to remove the footboards, notch the pilots, and add modern-style cut levers.

Nice looking unit so far. But with that SW cab it almost looks like the type without the cab overhang.

Nice looking unit so far. But with that SW cab it almost looks like the type without the cab overhang. You're right! I was eye-balling the N&W units (ex-NKP and Wabash) that had the roof overhang removed. This does look similar. The loco will receive paint sometime this weekend.

With all that window space, it needs an interior too. Great stuff!

Chuck that is fantastic looking. I know nothing about that type of locomotive but you have done a great job with that build.

Yessir;
Great looking model!
I have an old Hobbyline/John English model of this same loco.. I think it was built in the 50's or so. This gives me a little incentive to maybe do something with it! LOL
Again, great looking model,
GT Dan

That is friggin' awesome After the weathering, you need to get us a few more angles on it. BTW, your paint work and fit/finish are both really nice.

Thanks Anthony, Dan, slowfreight and Robert!
The cab roof will be silver with a blue horn. Weathering will be light so it will look like a fresh rebuild. The trucks, pilots and fuel tank will get the most of it. Hopefully, I'll get back on it the first of the week.
Dan - get yours out and get busy!
