Trevor I am with you on the buying a painted model and stripping it. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do when you want something and the only way to get it is painted. Though an undec would be so much easier..
I like what Athearn has been coming out with for sometime now especially since the SD50/60 and the 45-2 are my favorite locomaotives of all time. And since I model my own road I I have no problem stripping any engine I want...

I have to agree, as much as I don't like parts of the Athearn models, they do have a good and varied line.
I love the SD45-2, would like an NS one but I am put off of Athearn by my recent experience of their product, buying a Genesis unit and wanting to replace the handrails and not being entirely satisfied with the motor makes an expensive investment an extortionate one!

I am thinking about purchasing one of the southern units and converting it to a lease company to run as a leased power on my layout.

Anyone got the news that the undecs are now available for pre-order? My dealer listed the unit after the trainfest with order number G40532 (non sound) and G40632 (sound)
Have to add, that it is not necessarily a real Athearn number! They did that before to capture pre-orders in their own databank before Athearn releases the official order number.
But my question I have to the folks in here is, if someone has on of the 1st run GP38-2 with or without sound and has pictures how they look like inside (shell taken off).
I'm just curious what speaker the sound units have and where it is located at, or where I could locate one if I buy the non sound unit. If I can't fit in a bass reflex speaker, I don't want sound. So before ordering the undec I'd like to figure out which one to go with?

I bet SD40-2 will be the next model Athearn does.
What we need is a company to do modular kits. Some of this is available from Cannon. Brian Banna's GP long hood templates are one other componant. This could be expanded for SD38/40. Plano' s hood tops, with the fan holes are a good idea too. More choices are needed here too. The 38S had the two variations of rad fan spacing. The wider spacing carried over even longer on the 39s. Both classes here on the D&H were wide.
Smokey Valley had my concept down with their GP15. This model had so many variations. Highliner F units also fit this profile.
Our next problem will be frames and running gear/drives. If the manufacturers go this super rtr route, what are we going to use?

I bet SD40-2 will be the next model Athearn does. I hope so, but not too soon. I'm building some BN SD40-2s out of blue boxes. Of course when I buy all the parts they will actually show up. Personally a Genesis SD40-2 would have made a little more since than the GP38-2. IIRC, the athearn BB Gp38-2 was supposed to be really good, but the SD40-2 wasn't as good. Another reason I'd want a Genesis SD40-2? The genesis stuff seems to be made more than the RTR stuff. Try to find a BN SD40-2 (not counting the Bicentennial) in RTR. Darned near impossible, but I still find F45s, SD60Ms, and SD70Macs all over the place. Hopefully someone does that with the GP7, 9, 18, 20 and SD7, 9, 18, 24 series. Of course cabs, noses, and step kits (for instance GN wells with the extra step, like Railflyer's kit; just not made by them) would be greatly appreciated by me. As for the P2K GP38-2: I have two and I really like them. The detail is nice, they run and pull really well; and they aren't that pricy. I have 2 that I've added details to and they only set me back about $40 each. As for the Athearn Genesis Gp38-2: I wonder if it'll pull decently. After the Gp15, I'm wondering if the Gp38-2 will be as anemic as the GP15. I don't have a Genesis GP7/9 to see if it's just the Gp15 that's the weak puller.

Anyone check Athearn's website and see that they have pushed the GP38-2s out to March 2013 now? (sigh)

Delay is ok. I would rather them get it right then ship a product that is not what they said it was and have the buying public turn away. Besides gives me a little bit more time to save some money!!
