Time once again for another HO scale BC Rail RS-18 build, this time of the 615: For this model I used the Atlas RS-36, along with some custom resin and photo etch parts. Progress is here: The rear radiator grills came from the 608 build (Proto RS-18 grills) and the tread plate is from Railflyer. I removed all the molded on lift ring and grab detail, as well as the molded door latches. The nose and cab front are from Kaslo, as are the front and rear pilot faces. I still have to pre drill the side handrail holes, and figure out which brand of paint I'm going to use. For this build I set myself a deadline- finish the model before the July 2012 PGE 100 convention in Squamish BC. The model may be finished sooner, as there is an RPM meet in Calgary in a month or so, I may kick this project into high gear. The fuel tank is a custom resin part, and is friction mounted right now (it slipped off in one photo). -Trevor

CN and CP both painted SD40-2's for Expo 86 in Vancouver, BC as well as some CN rolling stock and trailers. BC Rail had units painted like this, I thought it was mostly C630M's but apparently not. Looks like this is going to be a great project.

For those of us who are not of the Canadian persuasion, what does a hockey stick have to do with an RS-18. Look at the top photo, the white stripe from the front, it goes straight like the shaft of a hockey stick, then it turns up in front of the shutters like the blade of a hockey stick...

The 1st rendition of the Red White and Blue colors were dubbed the "Hockey Stick" scheme due to the angle of the 2 rear chevrons resembling 2 hockey stick blades. -Trevor

615 is in the paint booth, so far I've painted the frame, truck side frames and walkways: Next is to shoot the white, which is the one color I hate to paint. Oh well, at least I'm making progress! -Trevor

Not to be too critical, but your resin cab face should have been set in slightly further to maintain the roof lip over the front. That aside, it's looking good. When I do the RWB scheme, I spray the body with Tamiya white Fine Surface primer. This covers extremely well and makes for a perfect white base. I then spray the red and blue keeping the white primer as the base white color .... Mark.

Thanks Mark. I just finished spraying the white, it went pretty good. I also picked up an Iwata airbrush and so far am very pleased with it, very easy to use, disassemble and clean! -Trevor

Looking very nice. If I can finish the few hundred projects I have, I will make one or more of those...... What paint are you using? is it the new BC Rail color from True line.?

The paint is the new stuff from True Line Trains, I got the opportunity to "test drive" some of it and so far I like it. The white covers really nice, way better than the Reefer White from Polly Scale I'm used to using. The best part is its all water based, so easy clean up and no harsh smell! -Trevor

The model is now painted, the Hockey Stick scheme turned out to be a real challenge to paint! I've got some touch up to do, then gloss coat and decals. Looks like the 615 will be done before spring! -Trevor
