Alex! I'd like to do one of these as well! Is this the bluebird scheme? I don't know about the steps but you can use Cannon treadplate stock and strips for the deck. If you need pics of the roof I got some incredible top-down photos of one of these off the BRC Clearing Yard bridge in Chicago.

Personally I use an 'air eraser' that I got from Harbor Freight, loaded with Baking Soda at somewhere between 40-60 psi depending on humidity, blasts those flaky bits right off. Do you need some type of cabinet (like a sandblaster) to use that? I just got a new HF catalog today...good timing.

no cabinet, just something to contain baking soda for reuse, so I have used large paper bags and plastic tubs, but only because I am trying to get at few more uses out of the material .

Alex- All that denotes is the type of knuckle stored in the bracket, as in type-E or type-F. The short hood 'F' still identifies the 'FRONT' end.
