I have 3 Athearn Genesis UP SD70M's and I want to add extra details to them, including a flared version. I have got the Details West detailing kit but it needs better instructions on where to place items Also it seems that it is all the underframe details, nothing on the cab roof If anyone can give any help, that would be a great help. Julian-
I know what you mean about the instructions: small, in black and white, and pixelated. I would suggest checking out their website, as they have the same images (and MORE!!) of the build for some kits. That's what I've done in the past anyway. Also, what rooftop details aren't included? Did you buy both the 'main' and 'accessory', or possibly just the 'accessory' kit? The accessory kit includes sander pipes, traction motor cables, etc., while the main kit should have all the other road specific details.
To clarify........what do you consider to be missing from the kit?

Well first off the detailing is kinda crazy in the detailing under frame of the 70 series engines. There is so much detail crammed under there its crazy. I have done two SD75's now and I learned some stuff from doing the first one. There will be some cutting of the walkway needed to get some parts to fit in the right place,I would also glue the tank together on the frame before detailing begins. Then glue the walkway to the under frame too as so many parts go from one to the other. I then trim the mounting lugs on the body and cab thin so they will be easier to slide on and off if needed.
Get as many detail close up shots as you can and have them handy to use as reference while building. This will help on placement of the parts also. A good source of reference is a Diesel Era magazine. They did an article on the UP SD70's a couple years ago. I will post that when I get home. I will also take some pics of the under frame I have just completed tomorrow so you can see all the clutter. It is awesome looking to see all the details under the walkway once it is done though.

Hi Rick,
Like you, I agree that the instructions are too small, black & white and very vague. What would be great is parts numbers and on a sprue, plus a description of the part. Also, it is supposed to be a UP SD70M detailing kit, yet there is constant reference to other SD70/75 members, makes it very confusing.
Because there is no reference to what is, what, I do not know if the aerials and GPS units that go on the cab roof.
Thanks Anthony for the pictures, it gives some reference on where to some of the units but the there was a article on Model Railroader by Pelle Soeburg but I no longer have it......d'oh lol

I have email Details West for clarity on whats in the detailing kit, but as yet no reply. I know someone does a resin casting for the flared section of a SD70M, any clues as to who does it?

DLH does make the casting, bear in mind it is resin, so it'll need some cleanup and will take some prep to paint properly. If you want to, you can scratch build your own, possibly using the resin part for reference for dimensions. I've seen that radiator section scratch built before, and it sure looks nice. I've worked with the resin part, and it takes some doing to paint properly. I had big problems with paint adhesion, so definitely take care on the prep for painting.
