Wow is all I can. First off that the SD60 is my all time favorite engine but your weathering job is awesome. Almost the spitting image of the prototype.
Would you mind explaining some of the techniques you used to get the weathering to look like the proto? Alot of members would love to be able to weather their engines to look as good as yours. Thanks for sharing the great piece of work with us.

Hey Anthony, I am humbled by your compliment dude. I thought that Santa Fe SD70 you did was just awesome, and I took techniques from you on that one man.
To start off I airbrushed the whole loco in a wash of flat gull gray acrylic base and before it was totally dry I took a stub brush (thick bristled brush cut down to the nubs) and scraped/scratched away the parts that were wiped away in the proto photo (ex. engineers side below horn area.)
Then, I lightly stippled with a cosmetic sponge the rusty areas. I like to call it "dry sponging." It's like dry brushing but with the sponge. I take a hemostat and tear off a piece of cosmetic sponge about the size of a small pea. Then, I worked the layers up light to dark with oils by dabbing the sponge on the hemostat into the oil and than wiping almost all of it off onto a paper towel. Then I applied it to the locomotive working my way light to dark. I just kind of rubbed it in until it was about the right size/texture. It was purely trial and error.
For the fuel tank/trucks I sprayed the same thinned gull gray mix and then dullcoted to seal it. After this I highlighted everything with a light wash of acrylic model master leather from the air brush again and when that dried I didn't dullcote it yet. Then I brush washed an oily black (black with a hint of brown) to get color in the cracks. After that dried I sealed again. Than I highlighted with dry brushing of aged white.
The fuel spill is brushed on with gloss black. After it gets dullcoted it's kind of matte finish. I wanted it to be greasier looking than the surrounding area.
That's pretty much it. Any other questions just ask. Again, your weathering is just amazing dude so I'm surprised you asked for MY technique! Have a good one!
And Rob, this Texas heat you guys have is the only reason I got this puppy done! Had to stay inside in the air conditioning!

Mo thank you for the compliment on the SD70, I had tried some new techniques to me on that model when I did it.
And your welcome. The reason I asked for you description is there are many different ways to reproduce a certain effect with weathering. Just because I did it a certain way, does not mean you did it then same. You might have found an easier way then the way I did. So giving different descriptions on the forum let's someone else decide how they would like to try to weather and now have a couple different choices to see which is easier for them. Thank you for sharing that with the forum Mo. Please share more as you get it done.

Those are some of the most realistic rust patches I have ever seen. In fact, the entire weathering job is top notch!
BTW. Is that the mighty CE-172 you are driving in that photo?
