I've seen green "FrogTape" on past trips to the Home Depot (next to the blue painter's tape) and always wondered if it worked better for masking models. The labeling says "PaintblockR is a super-absorbent polymer that absorbs the water in latex paints, expanding the tape's edge and creating a micro-barrier" (so I guess solvent-based users are out of luck). Anyways I bought a roll and tried it out on an old basketcase TFM locomotive. After the regular glass/razor and burnishing treatment, I sprayed on some thinned acrylic black-the paint separation was incredible! The tape seems somewhat thinner than the painter's tape, and clung well to all the latches, doors, and other surface details.
Has anyone else thought about using it? I'm not sure if it'd pull up a previous coat of paint though, but the adhesive seemed just the same as painter's tape. I'd use it again and highly recommend it!
I paid $4.97 for a .94"x60yd roll-they have other widths as well.

Did it peel the paint behind it at all? I've been having problems with that lately on my masking, though I think it might be more of a paint issue and not a tape issue.

I used it on a decorated SD40-2, but I didn't have time to mask again to see what it would do. If it's a quality paint job I can't imagine it doing much since the adhesive feels the same as 3M's painter's tape.

I masked over the paint I sprayed yesterday, and it didn't peel any of it up. I never even cleaned/degreased the shell before I did the test shoot, too. Seems promising. This side was masked with the factory tape edge, and wasn't even sealed around any of the hood details. (No paint peel-and I let the tape sit overnight) The razor-cut and sealed edge.

Wow, very impressive. Im used to burnishing the tape down around hood details, thats amazing that you got such a crisp line. Deninately worth antry on my next paint job. Thanks for posting your test results!

Well I'm going to give it a try on my next paint job. Too bad the tape is kind of on the expensive side.
Glad it worked.

For those of us that still like and use solvent based paints, I'm wondering if a light brushing along the tape edge with a damp brush would create the same sealing effect ?
Mark.
