Hello
When MTH brought out it's HO scale Little Joe's, I was a bit dissapointed by their work. They mixed the detail on the engine, so it doesn't fit in any era. I bought two engines, both in the black and orange freight scheme. One was detailed to match E75 in the early 70'. This is a relatively easy job, as it's all about detailing. I added rerailers on the rear platform and blanked out the rear cab windows with styrene. On the roof, I added vents. They're not prototypical but close enough. I think they're for passenger cars. The front end got an allweather window and a snowplow added. Finally I scratchbuilt the boxy structure on the cab roof.
Because of MTH limited DCC capabilities I installed ESU's Lokpilot decoder. Now the engine runs great MUed with diesels.

The second unit will be E74 in 1964. This means a repaint. Detailing is easier as on E75. No blanked out windows. I replaced the handrails with new ones beeing made of brass wire. The prototype did get diesel like stanchions when being rebuilt to single end operation, which was after 1964.

I thought they blanked off the rear windows almost immediately to fill the second cab with electrical equipment? I know the 70's era one should have the very tall m.u. stands, not sure when they got those but it was definitely a later add.
Nice looking Joe's, too bad MTH apparently dropped the ball on getting some of the basic details right for the schemes they did.

As far as I know they originally had the tall MU stands on both ends but removed it on the A end because they couldn't run 3 Joes in MU and saved some maintenance costs this way. They moved some circuit breakers to the B end. They probably blanked them out later.

Did the eyebrow grabs and ladder grabs get removed after the windows were blanked since nothing was left to clean?

Nope, all of the grabs were left in place. They plated over the large windows and I think just painted over the side windows but I could be wrong on that. The grabs were all left to allow access to the roof on that end of the loco. The cab wasn't used anymore but there was still a pantograph on that end that could require service.
Nice work on the Joe pmuckle81.
