need help ...
A guy would like to have my two Kato SD40-2 in UP paint scheme in exchange with two SD45's in Reading paint scheme.
They would fit into what I want to do, but I know that the Kato engines need some "detailing" to get closer to the prototype, especially the "fat" handrails are a pain.
worth getting them and super detailing them?

The local shortline purchased some SD45s, and we were all hot to model them a number of years ago, I always remembered Kato SD45s being a good choice, however this was in the days before the P2K release and your only other option was the Athearn Fat Body....

If you don't need the SD40-2's but do need the SD45 then make the exchange, the other guy needs the 40-2's .So if you get the 45's and think you really are not going to use them than you can sale them quickly on Ebay. They don't ever stay long on there and i believe they all get sold............

thanks guys, will see ... Plan was to get rid of my UP sd40-2's for the money, which I want to invest in new Atlas GP40-2's ... state of the art engines ... exchanging them to the SD45's wouldn't help me much on this project. Only the fact that I would be able to convert them in CR patch jobs sound interesting - but the handrails and grab irons are to fat...

The grabs can be replaced with the BLMA ones (which are super close to scale - #4510) and the hand rails can be replaced with Smokey Valley stanchions (kit #19 or #42) and .015" brass wire......

thanks!
I wouldn't worry too much on the Plano Parts, but the smokey valley item's are not available right now and nobody knows when they will be back ... I'm waiting since ages to get a replacement for my Atlas RS-11 ... don't need more units which will stay in their boxes for years because essential detail parts missing ... But I see, if I would like to invest enough money I could get even an old Kato to the state of the art.

I have 15 Kato SD45's, I would not think twice about getting rid of them. They are one of the best running locomotives produced. Yea the handrails are a tad fat, but not so much that I have ever considered getting rid of them.

Matt Matt, I agree with you completely.......they will out run anything else that I've seen and as far as the handrails go, I simply drill out the Kato stanchions and insert .015 brass wire for the handrails. They're strong, stand up under constant use and the stanchions really don't look that much out of proportion. Bob

The P2K has the best shell/details out there to date, but the drive in it SUCKS!
I would rather have a Kato than a P2K any day, as I can easily make the Kato as nice as the P2K with some aftermarket parts.

thanks guys for all the feedback! The Reading units would be a lot of work, especially when it comes to the cab ...
will see if I will trade my SD40-2's in or not, all depends on the quality of the Atlas GP40-2 which mail will bring before end of this week ^^
