Hi fellow diesel modelers. Wondering if any of you have tackled an ICG SD20 rebuild project in any scale. I'm using an old Tyco SD24 shell as the starting point only cause i've had it lying around for a few years. Hope to use an Railpower product SD9 frame (with Mashima motor/Athearn SD9 trucks) for the mech, as i think there's less machining involved to fit the Tyco shell than if i used an Athearn Bluebox SD9 chassis. Will be decorated in ICG Grey/Orange livery. Checked out cannon and co site for hood detail parts, but i'm unsure what height long hood doors would be appropriate as i'll have to probably replace all of them. Does any other aftermarket mfr make hood detail parts for this project? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Peter H. Australia

Oh man. This will be a challenging project. I started one at least 5 years argo and never finish it. I started my by using an Atlas sd24 newest run and I wanna to replace all doors but............ Cannon doors are to short on one side and to long on the other side. I started to cut the doors and it was a ............. and I never finish it.Any way.It still sitting on my desk. my frame and running board have been all modified, but I have to finish the long hood.. They are difference on each SD20's Some have the doors latches on the right door and some on the the left doors, Fan, sub case doors and cab... If I remember right, I put it on the ice when I ear kaslo shop are going to make it......... I will be a lot more easyer to built one by using an SD35 like 2038-2041 but it will not look at an real "PADUCAH SD20"built. Éric

hhmmm.... I haven't so far, but this sounds like another one for the to-do list... I have the same Tyco SD24 shell. BUT, I'm not doing that with the doors. I'll let myself off the hook by making it a club road unit (Empire Valley). I'll steal the cab & nose ect. to make it a low nose from another Tyco to keep it even in detail. lol

There was a article in MR some years back. It seems to me that it is a little incomplete (whether due to author error, or the editor fitting it into a tight space), but a decent place to start. Myself, I am starting with a P2K SD9 sound unit.
Railflyer might have some other parts you need. Now that they've come out with their "clean room" kits, that might make things easier.

Ya, I have that mag, and that's partly why I want to do this project. I am thinking of doing it as a former IC and making it a lease. I'm also thinking of using a better shell, or at least doing the Tyco as a first run and then doing another one later, but for now, I have others in the works. BNSF 1781 and BNSF 2008 are almost done!

Hard part is getting the squeaking when rocking side-to-side put onto the sound decoder. ;D They'll give you sea sickness, too! Hahaha squeak-squeak-squeak
