So, I have most of the mods done to this now except ditch lights, because they're the type that need surface LEDs. I also have to redo the filter hatch and get brake fans. BUT,... here is the frame sitch, I have to take the motor assembly ect. apart to see how much the cut will affect the motor chamber. I don't think the motor will hit the new fuel tank, which is from that Atlas GP40. I'll cut off the shallow wall behind the air reservoirs & the tanks themselves, and then either pin up the tanks from the 35 to the frame or glue them to the frame somehow. Anyway, I don't know if this cutting is gonna get done soon, I'm trying to clear out as many of the factory painted detail jobs as I can just to create some space around here! lol

Progress shots: (I think the brass antenna stand I made could be nicer, I should make a new one)

I just got the etched 36" fan parts made by Brian Banna the other day. Perry; Superfleet93 now has them all for sale. I know these are originally meant for GP30s, but with the mix and match that goes on in shops years later GP35u units such as this one sometimes wind up with this fan grille. New pics soon.

The Late GP35 with straight frames and 40 series fuel tanks are definitely cool. You'll want to knock off the extra louvers on the battery box doors also. The Cannon mods look great too! I just love a good GP35

Thanks Mark! I didn't see the louver difference till you called it out and I don't like letting things like that go, I really hope this thing comes out nice.
I'm pushing myself to cut the frame this week. I do need to order 36" cannon fans sets, so off to Highball Graphics! He also makes the smart start and remote control decals too which is a big time need for me, so I'll probably order 4 or 5 sheets.

Did you see that 2593 has cap 48" cap top rad. fans. Look at the ATSF re-stencil too It looks to me like the dynamic brake fan is modified to sit up higher with a little spacing under the bottom. It's typical of a lot of rebuilds I've seen.

Once you pointed that out I searched and found this: californiatrains.com/locations/tustin/bnsf2836_tustin_061607_01.jpgI do have fans like that from P2k from a GP20, but Cannon is working on those so, I think I'll wait. I did not notice the brake fan height either, so thanks for watching this build Mark! I think I can get the fans off of there. I've been thinking about the BNSF lettering. I think I will do it. It's a sign of the times. I have a bunch of those mirrors so as I put the finishing touches on units like this one, that kinda stuff will go on. I'm thinking about the best way to do ditch lights. I'm making scratch brackets, between that and how I'm drilling them out I think they'll stay put. I'll post pics of that once I get something done on a test shell to see if will actually work. Thanks again Mark. Dan

"It looks to me like the dynamic brake fan is modified to sit up higher with a little spacing under the bottom."
Its just a regular radiator fan... these were a little taller than the dynamic brake fans when new. Looking forward to seeing the model in its finished form. While I often think about the GP30-based units I tend to forget that GP35s were also a part of a rebuild program.
Does anyone know the specs of these ATSF rebuilds... was the prime mover replaced with a 645E... were the electricals rebuilt/replaced with newer components???

Hey Jerry, ya, I was hoping swapping a rad fan for the brake fan would work. thanks!
I thought the round appearance of the rad fans in the pic above was backround noise but I could see the 36" fan clearly.
I saw a thread that talked about the differences in rebuilds between these and what BN did. These did get prime mover upgrades and that's when the AC units went on. I forget what else was done.

"Does anyone know the specs of these ATSF rebuilds... was the prime mover replaced with a 645E... were the electricals rebuilt/replaced with newer components??? " Thats a good question. ATSF's GP30's & GP35's stayed on the roster for a hell of a long time. Santa Fe must have really liked these locomotives. I live 10 minutes from the heart of Cajon Pass. Before the days of big modern wide cabs, you could see GP30/35/39-2 helpers on the back of Santa Fe trains all day in Cajon. Those were the days

I found these: 1. The ATSF GP30 &GP35 units were rebuilt with new 645 power assemblies, new controls/wiring and D77 traction motors in the 80's. All are rated at 2500 hp, and they retained their turbos. The original control system pushed the limits of DC technology. You're right, they really must like them! 2. As of spring of this year (2009), I believe there were at least 7 former Santa Fe GP35u's that had been rebuilt (by Relco or NRE?) for BNSF and painted in the H3 paint scheme. These would have been numbers 2650-2656 and designated as GP39-3's. www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=BNSF&mid=1210BNSF 2650, ex-BNSF 2556 BNSF 2651, ex-BNSF 2585 BNSF 2652, ex-BNSF 2587 BNSF 2653, ex-BNSF 2559 BNSF 2654, ex-BNSF 2594 BNSF 2655, ex-BNSF 2630 BNSF 2656, ex-BNSF 2593 BNSF 2657, ex-BNSF 2546 BNSF 2658, ex-BNSF 2636 BNSF 2659, ex-BNSF 2643 BNSF 2660, ex-BNSF 2647 BNSF 2661, ex-BNSF 2644 BNSF 2650-2654 completed at RELCO. BNSF 2655-2661 completed at Topeka. Five more selected: BNSF 2608 Laid up for modification at RELCO BNSF 2611 Laid up for modification at Topeka BNSF 2616 Laid up for modification at Topeka BNSF 2634 Laid up for modification at Topeka BNSF 2637 Laid up for modification at Topeka The project is not just for GP35s. Two GP38ACs have been rebuilt into GP38-3Rs: BNSF 2390, ex-BNSF 2110 BNSF 2391, ex-BNSF 2114

We have the 2651 based here in Seattle. The rebuild get's rid of what ever electrical system was in the locomtoive and upgrades it to EMD's EM2000 system, hence the -3 designation. It's interesting looking at the various rebuilds some of these BNSF GP's have been thru over the years!

ok, I got the fuel tank on! I don't think I'll bother with the frame much on this since you can't see it like on a gp38, but I'll add air filters ect.
