I started working on KCS 1160, from a Athearn s-12, have grab irons mounted and am working on cleaning up body, will need to be creative with the grab irons, but I have some ideas. Simple build likely to be less than $50 but one that I want for my stable. Also does anyone have any thought on whether this is infact an S-12 or is it a DS-4 Vo1000??

I have an Athearn Baldwin, at least that's what it says on the box. Here's a pic...

I have two of the units that Athearn sold as S12's, these are the "wide-hood" style they had way back when. The original box is even labeled as such.
When did the Stewart shells come out, Uncle Jay, any idea? I'd be interested in knowing if there is a shell I could replace mine with that is closer to scale. The motor and drivetrain are very well broken in, and I'd be interested in finding something scale-size for the shell if there is something available.

Athearn S-12 is correct, built with the same drive as their SW-1500/SW-7.
As far as Stewart, they have done almost all variants of Baldwin switcher. Their website lists the different ones they've done. Not all are available at any given time, but are findable at hobby shops and fleamarkets.

Unless I'm stupid (known to happen), the pic looks enough like an S12 that even if it were wrong, you'd still be able to make it work. I built my repowered S12 starting with the Stewart model and I can't say enough good for it, especially with that Ajin mechanism. It's a tiny bit jackrabbity off the line on straight DC, but it's smoother than my Kato's.

Here is what I have planned and items purchased. scoured the part area leaving no area including N scale untouched and found my grates for the top in F-7 grills, daughter taking this computer away from me, so I will post later info.
