Just more than a week since Amtrak unveiled its first heritage unit, it came out of my paintshop yesterday: Old Blue Box, repowered with a NWSL motor...

I really think phase 3 is the best looking paint scheme Amtrak ever used. Very nice looking model! Do you have a unit in the as delivered "phase 3" to compare it to? I realize the stripes are all wrong on the as delivered scheme, i'd like to see them side by side.

Michael-
Looks great! How'd you do the stripping around the nose? Or are the decals simply from the regular P40/P42 set?

How'd you do the stripping around the nose? Or are the decals simply from the regular P40/P42 set? Lots of Microset ;D The stripes are all from other sets. The wider ones on the sides are from an Amfleet set, the smaller on the nose are from a heritage passenger car set, the transfer from wide small was cut and, as i said, lots of Microset...

No, what I mean is on the prototype, the as delivered scheme on the P40 (P42?) whatever this unit is... anyway the as delivered scheme was considered phase 3 but did not match any other phase 3 scheme on Amtrak's roster. The stripes didn't line up, and the colors were different shades of red and blue. This scheme, as displayed on 145 and your model of it, is much better looking than the as delivered scheme. I'd really like to see the 2 versions side by side. Maybe coupled to a phase 3 passenger car, to show the difference. Your model is VERY nicely done. Dave

Very impressive. You work fast. The paint is barely dry on the prototype. I think it is safe to say that you have the only one in world (so far). Did you use Floquil Platinum Mist? I have a F40PH that I want to do in Phase III paint. Charlie

The as delivered scheme was called Phase 3 although it was different from the standard scheme known from the F40PH or other equipment. I donĀ“t like it too...

Wow thats awsome looking. I was wondering how fast we'd see a model of it. Are you going to model each of the heritage units that Amtrak is doing?

Milw, Thanks for the tip on the Tamiya flat silver. I really like using their paint and the best part is that the Hobby Town USA down the street stocks them. Charlie
BTW. Where are you getting undec P40s?

That looks nice, I am actually debating doing one of those. And we have a swap meet coming up in another week or so...I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of those units. I liked the prototype photos, and I like your model too. Nice job!

Depends on. The Phase3 unit was made with three different sets, i hope the Phase 1 and 2 only need one set each...
