Nice find Glenn, definitely a great candidate for a custom weathering job!! Two things come to mind though when I look at this pic. 1. That unit spent a good 4 or 5 years working out of Barstow baking in the southwest sun. Or, 2... that was a "friday" paint job!!! LOL

I guess it's what's on the inside that counts.
Kinda sad to look at.

One of my friends thinks it has something to do with the primer they used, the paint didn't agree with it.

I worked on these units in Alliance Nebraska, there home shop. some of these units, the clear coat was peeling off in less than a year. a factory defect. not going to send it back for paint if unit is working well but, that one has definitely seen better days in the paint department

Wow that thing looks terrible. Nice catch though.
I always thought that was a really clayys scheme, too bad the BNSF didnt adopt that rather than the nike swoosh that they ended up with.

@damian! I'll get to this in a couple years! I was looking at that and also thought about using alcohol to get that effect. But I think the underpaint/masking technique of new paint would really make this come out nice. It's strange to see this unit in such condition, I still have the issue of Trains that has one of these brand new on the cover being delivered to BN. mike, This paint scheme did influence the current schemes. Where the 70 paint is creme, BNSF is orange, where the 70 paint is green, BNSF is H-green (H 1 & 2) or black (H3) and the red bands became gold/yellow. The logo... I don't know where that came from. As a graphic designer myself I can tell you those kinda things aren't favored. It's client interference that brings that about. Once you force yourself to accept it, it looks ok within the whole of the painted unit.

No offense Dan but I think the current BNSF (new and old) scheme is terrible. It looks more GN influenced to me than anything. And that herald is a joke, i can't believe they actually paid for that.

hehehe, ya I went through a grieving period when the merger came about. I may have had tyco ect. when I was younger, but BN & ATSF had been my favs for whatever reason since I was 10 years old. -I do a lot of patches! lol You're right, it is very GN influenced, I think the exec sceme was too, just in creme and green. -at least they're not purple!
