How do you guys secure the Tread kits to your locomotives? I would assume that you must get glue on every corner so you don't get any stick ups. What Brand treads are best for the Athearn RTR SD40-2 and RTR SD45?

As for what tread plates to use. You have two manufacturers to choose from. Cannon & Co. and Railflyer. Choose whatever you prefer, they both enhance the look of your model.
As for what to use to secure the tread plate to your model, I think I can help you there.
I use a mixture of Barge Cement and MEK. Both products can be purchased at your local Ace Hardware. Barge cement is a contact type cement. I thin it 60% MEK to 40% Barge. Sometimes I thin it 70% MEk to 30% Barge cement.
Make sure you spread it on both parts and allow to dry for a couple minutes. Due to teh MEK, it does not take long. Also make sure you spread it out to the edges of the two surfaces, but make sure you do not spread it onto anything you do not want it on. You will not get it off.
Next, this is a pressure sensitive adhesive. So do nto press your part in place until you are certain you have it exactly where you want it.

I forgot to add. You can mix this stuff up, put in in a sealed jar and it will last forever almost. Mine is over three years old and is still in the jar and still liquidy.

What Brand treads are best for the Athearn RTR SD40-2 and RTR SD45? Matt Cannon makes tread plates specifically designed for the Athearn SD40-2 in all the nose lengths. For specific part numbers see the Cannon web page: www.cannonandco.netNeither company makes specific tread plates for the SD45, but both Cannon and Railflyer make sheets of generic tread plate that can be cut to fit. Brian's suggestion of a mixture of Barge Cement and MEK are recommended by Cannon and Company as the prefered method. David Hussey Cannon and Company
