Working on this for DD member Justin (bcrail)... He sent it to me months and months and months ago, right before I started working for the M&E... I got distracted by ALCo's (like any good foamer) and I'm just getting to it now. It's a factory painted Athearn blue box with a Kaslo cab that will be painted to match. Paint matching was easier than I thought. Using all Scalecoat II paints, the red is dead on for ATSF red, and the blue is an easy mix of 2/3 D&H blue and 1/3 C&O blue.

It's ok to be distracted by Alco's. I know I would be. This looks bloody awesome. I'm excited beyond words to see her done.

She sure looks purdy!!!!!! I can't wait to see the finished product.
May I ask where you found the pilot steps for this unit? I am working on a CN C44-9WL and have not been able to find a suitable match.
Thanks,

Well, that raises another question that I have for Justin. It's supposed to only have 4 steps, not 5, and fixing it would involve some major surgery. Actually, pretty much the entire pilot is wrong (anticlimbers, stairs, etc.). From what I gathered, he's looking for a good "3-foot rule" model.... but I suppose I should ask him and make sure he's okay with a bit of fudging on my part. .... Justin, you okay with that? ;D

That's possible, but it looks like the easier solution is to just hack up the sill from an Atlas Dash 8, which is now in the mail on its way here.

Thanks... but the Atlas part is already on its way, and since this is actually my first resin project, I'd like to keep the amount of resin to a minimum until I know exactly what I'm doing. ;D

Oh,
Silly me. I can't even count anymore... I'm in the same boat. "This pilot is hopeless" type of mindset.
Happy New Years regardless,

Alright boys, it's time for a new installment of PILOT WOES!!!![/size] In this action-packed episode, Rudy and Justin closely examine the pilots and stairs on Justin's Athearn blue box BC Rail D9-44CWL that Rudy has already modified with a correct Kaslo resin cab kit. When they realize that the number of stairs, shape of the anticlimber, and ditch lights are all prototypically incorrect, our heroes must race against time to apprehend a rivet-counter's solution! Suddenly, Rudy is stricken with an idea, and orders an Atlas B40-8 sill piece... WITH THE CORRECT STAIR ARRANGEMENT!!! The members of the Diesel Detailer forum retaliate, suggesting an H&D replacement piece instead! However, outsmarting their helpful suggestions, Rudy receives the sill in the mail ONLY THREE DAYS AFTER ORDERING IT! However, try as he might, Rudy cannot determine a suitable way to attach the Atlas pilot and stairs to the Athearn model without destroying the structural integrity, which was THE VERY SAME REASON HE VETOED THE H&D KIT! He suddenly realizes that the Atlas pilot also still leaves him with an incorrect anticlimber and ditch lights, as well as NO COUPLER BOX!!!! Disheartened, confused, and bewildered by the sudden change in the course of events, Rudy and Justin deliberate over their next move. They must apprehend the solution! But they cannot do it alone... they must utilize the infinite wisdom and assistance OF THE DIESEL DETAILER BOARD!!! TO BE CONTINUED....

Rudy,
Can you mark up on the photo of the Atlas sill what you plan on using? I think I am on to something, but need to know what parts you are using. Is that a Athearn C44-9W?
Thanks Erik

Thanks Erik I don't really know. i could use everything from the stairs forward including the walkway and then just rebuild the pilot details and anticlimber, but that would have no structural strength. Or I could try to cut it off under the walkway, which might have some room for reinforcement but be a very awkwardly precise cut. Or just try to use the stairs.

Well Rudy... You do have another option.... greenwaybrass.com/img_ts/pilot-8-40cm_lg.jpgI am not 100% sure, but I believe that the CM40-8 and C44-9WL had the same pilot. Again, I could be totally wrong on that, but you may want to look into it. Did SuperEspee save the day??? Only time will tell. HAHAHAHHA John

Hello Rudy and Justin I would stay with the Athearn Pilot. There was an article in Canadian Railway Modeller in 1998 (part1: train 7, track 5 and part2 in train 7, track 6) www.cdnrwymod.com/body.htmThe author modified the shell with A-Line brass steps. Someone at this forum made a similar modification to a GP shell, I think. Cut out old steps, leave some material of the undermost step for support and strength, make supports from brass wire, drill holes through Pilot and sorry - how is that thing called on the other side, what extends downward from the side sill? - , glue or solder the steps to these supports. For anti climbers you can use Kaslo Dash 9 detail kits. File down the original Athearn anti climber a bit to fit the kaslo parts over it. I will try that on my model of CN dash9, but first I have to open the long hood walkway for some see through grate. I stuck a bit in that project because I had to do some bench work. Maybe Justin, as a Canadian, can organize some of these Canadian Railway devoted journals. greetings
