Here’s another Athearn RTR unit I tinkered around with and now it’s finally finished. I bought more than a few of these things and picked the one that ran the best before letting it sit in the box for over a year before I worked it into a better looking model. After tweaking the drive train to make it run as well as an Athearn possibly can, I turned my attention to the shell. The only surgery I did was filling in the massive hole on the cab roof where the rotary beacon used to be and also moving the headlight into the low nose. I removed all of the factory cab roof details and replaced them with aftermarket parts. I also added lift rings to the roof. All of the factory fans were changed out and I used Q Fans from an Athearn RTR SD60 and the dynamic brake fan is from Cannon. I have an overhead shot of 3802 from late 1994 and the rear radiator fan was painted primer gray so mine also has that detail. I also added the windshield wipers, new pilot details and sand lines were added to the trucks. I also added working ditchlights and lightly weathered the unit. Now it’s really Ready to Run and fits in nicely with the rest of my Santa Fe stuff! Now – to the pictures:
