I love it!! Why do the American railroads prefer the headlight above the windows?

Well KCS have mostly patched out the units that had nose lights. The only units KCS has with nose lights are the EX-CN SD40-3s,KCS AC44CW,and ES44ACs.

Well, I would imagine that bell mounted to the front of the cab was the first thing to go because of noise. High mounted headlights illuminate better. Low mounted headlights look funky. Those would be my reasons. lol

I preferred the high mounted headlight, as it seemed to cast further down the tracks at night. The bell, while annoying, I didn't care the location of the mounting.
The only thing I have found nice about Canadian stuff are ditchlights. I didn't like their wide cabs (windows)..LOL

Matt, did you ever get a lot of glare on the nose from units that had high mounted headlights? Christian

I would think they have shields, don't they?

If you are talking about the KCS. Most of their trackage locations doesn't get heavy snow, but their EX-CN SD40-3s still have the snowshields.

The glare issue was from heavy snow and heavy fog, otherwise it wasn't a big issue. The visors kept the kick back from the light, but the glare from the light hitting thick fog or snow could get bad. Either way, nose or cab roof, it wouldn't matter for that issue.
