The next project scheduled for the Penn Lake shops is Reading-izing my C424s. My buddy painted them for me several years ago. Now they will get upgraded to the same standards as my Penn Lake units... And while the paint scheme is a slight fabrication, (the real Reading only applied the Bee Line logo to select 6 axles), I think it's a classy scheme. The units will get proper horns, firecracker radio antenna, frame mounted bells, and of course the Reading Rain Gutters. These units also had two sand fill hatches on the nose. Nick

This upcoming project has become a little more involved. While body is correct (mostly) for the Reading C424s, the stock Atlas fuel tanks are not... www.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg5203ags.jpgThanks to the modular construction of the Atlas frame, this should be a relatively easy correction. Also, I didn't notice this before, the handrail stanchions are mounted on top of the running boards, not the side. I'm going to cheat on that and just paint the bottoms of the stanchions to match the sill. Nick

I've started my C424 project. I began with an undec one, as practice before hacking into the painted ones. Normally, I add the horns before painting, but because of the masking required for the Cream and Green scheme, I'll permanently secure them after finishing the paint. Nick

I have a question about the C424 fuel tanks. They look pretty narrow in the the photos... www.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg5203ags.jpgI have two option for modeling them on my Atlas units. A.) Just the fuel tank cast on the chassis. This looks right based on the photos, but lacks the detail: B.) The Atlas cover, with all the gauges and fillers. This one has the detail, but looks too wide, plus I have to fill the slots where the bulgy sides clip on: I'm leaning toward A and adding Details West gauges and filler pipes. Any thoughts? Nick

I have a fleet of 425s I plan to do in my pseudo NKP/River Run scheme. I've been contemplating if I want to grind down the frames and add the I Beam frame detail or not. As they will be black underneath, I'm beginning to think this would be a waste of time, as I have added frame detail to my Norfolk & Western units and you can't see it anyway. I would add some detail like filters, air lines, and piping, but unless the underframe area is going to be done in a light color?

Actually, the C-424 phase one walkways mount on top, later phases have the side mounts. Atlas has both types. John Also, I didn't notice this before, the handrail stanchions are mounted on top of the running boards, not the side. I'm going to cheat on that and just paint the bottoms of the stanchions to match the sill. Nick

I finished up the fuel tank modifications, and added the air tanks. I need to add the strapping to the air tank. And then it's off to the paint shop! Nick

After completing the detailing for the undec unit, I tackled one of the painted ones. I did all of the body detailing for unit 5203: With that done, it's on to the fuel tank and pilot modifications. Nick

Work on the decorated C424's continues. All of the body and pilot details are complete. The fuel tank and truck modifications are finished and just await paint. Even though Reading painted the bells to match the frame, I painted mine brass to make them stand out. Next up is painting the fuel tank and doing the handrails. The units may also get new more accurate cut levers. Nick

And C424 #5203 is complete. Overall: Front End: #5202 is ready for the paint shop. Work on #5208 is stalled because I can't find DW AH-190 air horns anywhere. Nick

nbrodar,
A belated thanks for sharing those photos, particularly of the nose. I helped me fix some detailing omissions/errors on the Atlas shell for CR 2492, which would have been an ex-RDG unit. James Bilbrey La Vergne, TN

Sweet Unit! I remember the works on the tank pretty well my self! A few years later, your unit could look similar to mine:
