Here’s a quick little project I did over the last few days – and it only took a few hours of spare time. Athearn’s updated SDFP45 is one of the best looking models I’ve ever taken out of a box. But I wanted mine to look pretty worn since in 1995, it was in the twilight of it’s career on the ATSF. Here’s the before view: First, I popped off all of the see through, etched stainless steel grilles and applied a coat of flat black to the inside of the grilles. After weathering the trucks and underframe with several layers of grime and soot applied by airbrush, I dry brushed more flat black onto the trucks. I also applied several thin layers of soot and flat black to the roof. I relocated the horn and added the air line and I also replaced the air conditioner with a yellow one. After shooting the model with a few coats of dull coat, she’s ready to go to work! Here’s the after view:

Sammy that is damn fine looking! Isn't it nice to have the new Athearn shells to work from? I mean I cut my teeth years ago hacking up Blue Box stuff but man this is like being spoiled when you get one of the new shells to work with. Keep up the great work and Id like to see more pictures of that one if you have any! Paul

Nice one buddy! You NAILED it. I agree with Paul; the new Genesis' are the way to go. How'd you pop the grills w/o damaging them or the shell? I had a he'll of a time with the rubberized glue they used.....

Sammy, I think the black behind the grills and the yellow a/c really highlight the engine. I can't wait to see it in your next video.

Hey Sammy that rocks! Sometimes the most fun projects for me are ones that you can just take out of the box and do some light work to. Awesome results!

Thanks a bunch for all for the kind words everyone. Since this unit has sound, my son has really been running the wheels off of it. It made at least a half dozen trips on the layout today! Rick, Those grilles came off quite easy – in fact, there were 2 of them already off inside the box! I used CA to glue them back in so they ain’t goin’ no where now! Here are a few more pics: Another roster shot: Leading a Q Train on it’s first trip on my layout. Head on shot of 90’s bright red nose.

Needs some gloss coat on that thing Sammy. Those things never stayed running long enough to get dirty. ;D Your buddy Hoover
P.S. you need to bring that up with you next month so I can check it out closer. It does look nice.

That looks great. I sure wish we would have had those about 10 or so years ago when I modeled #90. Nice one buddy! You NAILED it. I agree with Paul; the new Genesis' are the way to go. How'd you pop the grills w/o damaging them or the shell? I had a he'll of a time with the rubberized glue they used..... Rick Rick, a trip through the mail system will take those grills right off. Both my F45 and FP45 arrived with some of the grills loose. The ones that were not off just popped right off when I slide a hobby knife under a corner. Mine were probably early runs. Maybe Athearn got complaints and changed the glue they are using. The grills on my tunnel motor were not so easy to get off they had a rubberized glue like you described but came off with some patients and careful prying with very little damage.

Sammy, great job! You may want to consider adding just a smidgen of grime to the front handrails (and the other ones, too), sort of like how you did the air conditioner, maybe not quite as much, to take down their brightness. Nice photos, thanks for sharing!
