OK, I've been looking for a HO Scale Track Observation car for sometime now. The only problem is... NO ONE MAKES ONE! So, it was time to find a kit. I was able to purchase this Athearn CB&Q Fluted Diner from the local hobby shop for a mere $9. My problem was no railroad has a stainless fluted Track Observation car. Then CSXT Came to the rescue. Presenting CSXT "Georgia" ex-SBD 318, exx-Georgia 120, exxx-AWP 120. I think with a little bashing and some hard work its definitely possible to turn out. Also come to find out this car has been rebuilt and is no longer fluted but smooth-sided.

The exterior bodywork shouldn't be that hard to knock up from that model with litho plate or some such, but with that big ass window on the front, you will probably have to be doing at least part of the interior in detail, so you'll need some decent reference for that. You can get away with having the blinds drawn on some of it though. If interior reference is tricky to find, I'd be tempted to use slightly smoked acetate for the window and just hint at what is inside, because the glass does actually look fairly dark in that pic. Good luck with it anyway.

James, I think the fluted sides would make a better looking model. Look at Union Station products for car sides. They have quite a selection and you may find something exactly like the CSX prototype.

Thanks Guys, project will prolly commense this weekend as I just recieved my Decals for my GP38. I am going to use the current Car Body as a base, and then cut up another Fluted car (Baggage) for all the added fluting and making windows where they need to be.
As for the interior, my thoughts lie on a modified coach interior and stack the seating so its a theatre style infront of the big window, then pull "shades" on the rest of the car.

what are you going to use for the window end? Didn't train station products make something for this kind of observation car?

Just an idea, If you read the latest model railroad hobbyist, Matt Snell talked about a place that woud do custom car sides very cheap for any rail car, just needed to provide photos and there is a video of how he put them together! You could use train station products rear theater car window for the end also! Hope this helps.
