I'm working up to it. I do admit, I've done almost all EMD, with only a couple GE bashes. I think I'll start by doing a C425 in early 2011.

I talked to a Bowser rep at The National Train Show in Milwaukee in July. He told me that we should expect an announcement and pre production sample for an HO C636 at Milwaukee Trainfest in November 2010. No announcement ,no sample and no explanation. Cmon Man!! They have the Hi-Ad trucks and the expertise, the rest should be easy. Your loyal IC,PC and SP&S modellers are waiting with baited breath for some good news.

Two of the original Alco demo units are stored "freeze damaged" on the WNY&P. Are these the freeze-damaged units? EDIT: Just noticed, there's a modle of this unit posted earlier!

2338 is their new toy acquired from CN just recently.
IIRC, units 77 & 78 are the popsicle units.

When I took that picture (yesterday, even!) they were both shut down, but 85 was making a buzz sound every 30 seconds or so, and 2338 made a ping noise at random intervals.
And is that "their new toy" they being WNY&P or RRPX?

I guess most of these units are lease units from what I see on the official forum.

RRPX 2338.
Donno if it'll be parts or not, most of the loco is probably intact so that's a good thing. The only thing that CN really used for parts on it were the trucks (since repaired for transport).
There's a shot on CRO facebook of RRPX 2338 next to the brand new CN 2338 (GEVO).

As for the C636 ConCor produced one in 1984 and was available up to possibly the early 1990's in N-SCALE ,not sure about HO-SCALE though.. At this time you would probably find one in the used market.

I'll find out about 2338 next week. The owner of RRPX also owns the M&E, so I'll talk to him directly.

Hi Working on my 3rd C-636, this one for a friend. It's from Atlas C-630, LL C-424 and CC C-636 parts on an Atlas chassis. Some benefits over the older one as the shell is narrower. The Atlas cab is also better than the Life-Like one. Now, has anyone tried Atlas SD-50/60 trucks in the C-630 Chassis? This will make the Hi-Ad trucks a lot more straight forward as on the Kato SD-40 chassis on my older C-636. Still some work to do replacing the radiator intake louvres with screen and the water expansion tank front is being extended (piece of white styrene on hood top). Cheers Steve Modelling NJ in NZ

I was all hot and bothered to start building an M-636 or C-636, but seeing as how Bowser has announced they will be making one, I think I'll wait and just work one of theirs over to an M-636 CP loco. I was wondering about the number posted of how many were built though. The looking around I did showed there were 83 C-636s built, not 34 as stated earlier.....not that it matters anyhow. And if you add in the 111 M-636s built by MLW, then it gets a bit more impressive.

Hi I'm not sure how many (if any) pure Alco built C-636's were built for the iron ore railroads in Australia, but in the U.S. there were 34. SP&S 10, PC 15, IC 6, Alco demo to MK 3. Incredibly 3 still exist, though only 1 is operational. The DL has an ex PC unit, WNY&P has 2 of the former demos on their property, and I believe the third demo was scrapped on the Cartier. Cheers Steve

The numbers I have seen also add the 20 built by Alco for FNM in Mexico and the 29 built under license in Australia. 12 for Hamersley, and 17 for Mount Newman.

Wish I had time to research the details a little more. It's an iteresting subject and worthy of it's own thread. The number of actual C-636's verses M-636's is a little blurred in Australia and needs time to sort. There are C-636's built under Alco licence by AE Goodwin, way after Alco stopped building them. There are M-636's built by Goodwin then Comeng, then there are the imports of several second-hand C-636's from BN & CR.
As for Mexico, I wasn't aware of any Alco C-636's going south of the border. I thought all the 636's in Mexico were MLW M's.
I'm sure there's a site somewhere that has all these listed. Could be worth a look. Cheers Steve

This is my 3rd attempt at the Alco Hi-Ad truck in Nscale. I stated with the Bachman Spectrum SD40 trucks and mechanism and ended up milling the zinc halfs to make it fit under the Atlas C630 shell. It runs well, outpulls the stock Atlas version but does not have quite the slow speed performance of the stock Atlas. The side frames have 14 individual parts on each frame. I used bass guitar string pieces for the springs, each spring had to be surface ground on each end to ensure flatness. The shock absorbers and torsion control bar had to turned out of brass round stock on my unimat lathe. The other parts were cut from styrene and superglued to the frame. I used a #80 drill to place casting holes where needed. It was a chore to make but rewarding. I have started to make some resin castings of the frames. I plan on making myself a C636 out of Atlas parts someday and will use this truck on it
