From the photos I have been looking at the NS GP38s dont have the circular grabiron on the end of the long hood roof like my Atlas GP38 highhood. The NS GP40s seem to have that. The horns look like they would be in the way on the NS gp38s if it did.

Depends if you are looking at an ex-N&W GP-38ac or an ex-Southern Railway GP38-2. The ATLAS GP-38s are not GP38-2s.

It's been rebuilt to -2 standards, see the angled filter box in front of the dynamic brake section? Those units have a simple grab iron by the bell. I don't quite understand your posting here. Are you planning to build the Southern unit in your photo? Are you asking what you should start with to build that unit? If so, the Atlas might not be an easy option. Maybe an Athearn? Look and you will see the steps on all four corners are completely different from most GP-38s. Maybe you should use components from Railflyer Models, they make the steps Southern used on these. Jim Six did an article on modeling these years ago in one of the model railroad magazines.

Okay, I looked at the atlas website and what I have is what they referred to as a high nose GP38 wit h the straight air filter box. It was bought undecorated and painted NS. I think it might be beyond my novice skill to do the conversion you mentioned. I completely overlooked the angle air box on those units. Thanks for bring that to my attention. Were the Southern units built originally with different step wells or was that part of the rebuild? So does the atlas HH GP38 that was sold have the correct step wells for a GP38? I'll eventually get it

If you can find the July 1991 issue of Model Railroading, there are articles by Jim Six that tells how to build the locomotive you want to build.

Some of the Southern locos (listed as a GP38s on same site), for example #2762 have angled filter boxes. Were those rebuilds too (specificially referring to #2762) or did some GP38s come with angled and some with straight sided air boxes before the rebuilds?

The horns look like they would be in the way on the NS gp38s if it did. The NS GP-38's that belonged to the Southern did not have the circular grab on the end of the long hood because these units had a horn on the long hood end and there wasn't room for both the horn and the grab iron. The ex-NW units were equipped with only one horn mounted on the high short nose and they did have the circular grab iron on the long hood end. Bob
