Hi all, I finally added a new article to my web site. It is a one pager on how I made new bolsters for an Atlas SD35 to allow the use of Kato SD40 trucks. This was done for Bob Harpe. www.6axlepwr.com/Go to the STUFF page and then click on the link "Atlas SD35 Bolster Conversion" Brian

Don't wish, get at it. It does not take much. Just a sense of wanting to do it and patience. Step out of the box and open your imagination. Most important, do not be afraid to just dive in. I started more years ago than I can remember with this and I cannot even count the number of models I ruined during my experiments. But it all has been a learing experience and it is loads of fun when you finally figure out what your doing.

I saw your site last year when I returned to the hobby and it's been downhill for me ever since Brian. lol Between you and Andy, that's what got me started again.

Brian,
Nice solution to the problem. Now I wonder what Bob will do with the P2K SD7 trucks I got him for the conversion... When I built mine, I figured out that the P2K SD truck would fit under the Atlas chassis with very little work. (add a .010" shim to the bolster to get same height as original truck)
The P2K truck is so similar to the Kato, you can get the Kato sideframes to mount with a little bit of trimming. I think I actually got my set of low mount side frames from you!
Anyways - building a Southern SD35 is one of the more expensive locos I have done. Getting the trucks corrected is a huge undertaking/cost. Certainly would've been nice if Atlas would tool the various sideframes the SD354's used.
NW, Southern and one or 2 others (WM) had the low mount style trucks on their SD35's.
Regards, Brian Everett

Randy, I do not think all the NW SD35's had that style truck. I am not knowledgeable with N&W, but I think some were delivered with what we would call the type II flexicoil as in this photo here www.rr-fallenflags.org/nw/nw1575adc.jpgBrian

Some got switched over at shoppings. The SD-40s were also, I have photos of SD-40s with the early style truck, later same unit with later truck.
