Here are some pictures of my SF30C project that I built back in 2003. First, here’s some info on the prototype: ATSF’s Cleburne, TX shops built the first SF30C from an aging U36C in 1985. Included in the remanufacture was the addition of a new nose, a modified cab, and the additions of several GE Dash 7 upgrades which required several changes to the carbody including a revised radiator section due to needing more space for a new oil cooler. Several of the grilles were also reworked as well as the front steps leading into the cab. The electrical system was also relocated to behind cab and a larger access door was added. The trucks were rebuilt and a large anticlimber was also added to the front pilot. The old exhaust stack was replaced with a larger Dash 7 silencer type exhaust stack and the cab roof top was changed extensively due to the need of additional antennas used for the locotrol equipment. The first unit was tested for 5 months before the project was deemed a success and 69 more U36C’s were rebuilt into SF30C’s. I used an Atlas U36C for my starting point and made the required changes and modifications to the shell. Here are a few in progress pics (pardon the quality of a few pics taken with my first 3mp camera): Stock Shell: Modified shell: Finished shell: See here for a few more pictures of the project: www.pbase.com/sammy1974/kitbashed_sf30c

Thanks for the compliments, guys! My ole buddy Hoover was even kind enough to drop by and add one of his tired green jokes. ;D
riss2509, If I were to build another one, I'd probably use some see through screening on the top of the radiator and try to do better job on the new grille work on the sides. I'd also try to make the changes to the battery box doors like I did on the SF30B I built. I'd also modify the trucks since the correct ones aren't offered.
Stephen, I don't have any measurements at all, everything was built from guesses and estimates. In fact, I built 3 noses before I came up with one that looked right to me.
