Modeling the Nickel Plate Road through downtown Cleveland has the added bonus of the Cleveland Union Terminal tracks running along side much of the NKP main line. The in the mid to late 50's the CUT saw up to 50-60 passenger trains a day mostly from the NYC but with a few from the NKP, Erie and B&O. Great excuse to model some different railroads and a lot of passenger equipment! Since the Brand X Diesel Forum seemed kinda lonely, here's a New York Central passenger service Fairbanks-Morse CPA-24-5 by True Line Trains. Looks like a retooled Proto 1000 C-Liner with a P2k PA-1 6 axle truck on the rear to me. These engines (4500-4507) were delivered in 1952 but by 1956 all had been re-engined with the EMD 567C. The model will represent one with a EMD engine. No progress yet as you can see, just the raw RTR engine. I have some detail parts I need to order first. So while I wait this gives me a nice opportunity to practice my photography on my new shelf layout/test track and show off a unique engine type to everybody ;D Prototype

That looks like it is going to be an interesting build

Looks good to me. I think I've got a slide of one of those derailed.

I always thought Baldwin had the best looking cab units. Sounds like and interesting build. Did NYC or EMD do the rebuilds? I like the Baldwin Sharks a lot also. I understand when it was the Pennsy's turn for transfer duty between their Kinsman Yard and the NKP's E.55th ST Yard, the RF-16 Sharks would occasionally be used. That's good enough reason to add an A-B-A set to my roster! My Bowser N5c PRR Lake Division cabin is lonely anyways. Anyways about the FM CPA-24-5. These FMs were re-engined at the NYC's Collinwood Shops. After looking the unit over some more, I've found some issues. The front C-Liner trucks look pretty bad with the molded on brake cylinders, and will have to be replaced with Train Station Products/Smokey Valley C-Liner Truck Sideframes. There is also a missing rear radiator fan on the engineers side which can easily be seen on my model and prototype photo. I haven't decided how to go about fixing that yet.

None yet, waiting on some detail parts. Plus I'm trying to figure out what to do about the missing radiator fan.
I guess I have 3 choices..
1. Live with it. 2. Cast a new one off the current shell. 3. Cut a slightly different looking one off a old AHM? c-liner shell. Would need to find a cheap one on ebay first.
In the meantime a plastic cement spill at the kitchen table has me looking for a new work area. Inspired by the recent workbench photo thread, I'm gathering supplies to build a permanent home for my modeling and expand my small starter shelf layout to run above it.

Lol i've made my share of messes at the table. Do you have any roof shots of the rebuilds? I've searched the internet for any roof shots of these CPA-24-5's or the similarly re-engined 5000 series 4 axle C-Liners, CFA-20-4. The best I've found is ground shots of the C-Liners in a NYC Diesel Book. They show the typical pair of EMD exhaust stacks poking up from the top of the roof.

So the rest of the FM roof details stay the same? I won a A & B set and would like to modernize them for the 21st century. It looks like the roof stays the same except for the 2 early EMD exhaust stacks spaced out like a GP9. I would imagine the FM exhaust gets plated over perhaps? At least that's what I was planning to do. I found a cheap NYC 50's early diesel dvd on ebay, maybe I'll get lucky and see something there.

Well that sounds fairly easy. Got to figure out how I'm going to do ditchlights on them now. Turns out Jim Six did an article in the June 2002 MR on detailing a re-engined NYC C-Liner. I had it sitting in a pile on my desk all this time! Go figure. The pilots on C-Liners are pretty beefy and would take ditch lights well for your units I would think. Or do'em like the rebuilt NS F-units, in the nose.

I have an add-on question for the NYC CFA-20-4 from P1K...I'd like to eliminate the front coupler and put a cover over the opening. Did the freight units have this feature as well? And isthe part available?

There's a couple of photos of the 5000s in the early fifties with coupler covers in David Sweetland's book "C-Liners"
