Hey all, Here are a couple photos of a Southern Pacific all-steel 62' wood chip hopper that I scratchbuilt earlier this year. Yes, E&C makes a model of these cars, however, the detailing is horrible and they look pretty bad upon close inspection, so I decided to completely scratchbuild one! I also weathered it to look as if it has been used and abused over the years. Here are the results: Thanks for looking!

I started to scratch a couple of these about 10 years ago before there were any commercial kits available. I was using a article in Model Railroader as a guide. You did a bang up job on this car, now I need to finish mine.

That's a good looking chip car. The problem I found was that you wind up wanting a whole string of them. Again, good job.

That looks great. Much better that the E&C car. Scratch building it was well worth the effort. I also weathered it to look as if it has been used and abused over the years. If you call that looking abused, you have not seen some of the wood chip hoppers I have seen after hauling scrap for awhile.

Great looking car! Scratching building is a very rewarding endeavor. You can buy all the RTR cars you wish, but the one or more you scratchbuild gives you a great feeling of accomplishment that can't buy.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys, I really appreciate it. I agree, this car really isn't "abused", just used! LOL The next cars I build are going to have dings and gouges in them. This car is modeled as it would have looked in the late 1980's.
And I also agree about scratchbuilding, it is a wonderful thing, until you've done it you don't understand how rewarding it is!

Very nice car! I'm still trying to find the Kaslo 62' foot BCR/PGE wood chip cars, still nothing.

This car looks Great!!!
The only problem I see is that there is only one of them and these cars never seemed to be alone. So 1 down 100 to go right =) =)

Very nice, needs a load though I've taken styrafoam and glued sawdust onto them for my E&C cars (I know, bad detailing) but the load looks convincing. I never was able to figure out how to put a convincing looking tarp on top of them though. Nice job on the car though, the weathering looks great.

Beautiful JOB!!!! I saw about ten of these along with some slab sided ones in the Hump yard in Roseville on Thursday. You got it right, the ones I saw were nicked and gouged, but yours are perfect. Very nice, needs a load though I've taken styrafoam and glued sawdust onto them for my E&C cars (I know, bad detailing) but the load looks convincing. I never was able to figure out how to put a convincing looking tarp on top of them though. Nice job on the car though, the weathering looks great. Mike as far as tarps go, experiment with different grades of paper dipped in a 30-40:70-60 whiteglue and water/alcohol mixture. you can even put in acrylic paint into the mix to tint tarp without having to paint once all dried. the reason to use alcohol over water is that it dries quicker(thus keeping its shape.

Hi Andrew & all. Great scratchbuilding job. Brilliantly lightly weathered, but not looking abused. Just searching some full size SP woodchip cars on www.railcarphotos.com but some look really bashed up. I recently bought 6 E&C shops HO kits of smoothside SP & ribbed side undec models. Finished the 1st smoothside SP car last night. Had to make up plastic shims in their coupler boxes so the kd5's wouldn't be so sloppy &, the E&C trucks wouldn't roll, so i changed them to Athearn 90399 Hyatt roller bearing. While i enjoy this type of kit modifying, it's more work than the instructions with the kits suggest. Thanks for the photos. Pete H. Australia

Good tip Justin, I'll have to give that a try (proabbly on a scrap model first just in case I goof it up )

Thanks for the comments everyone! I keep seeing over and over that the model is not bashed up enough, while I agree that it should have some decent dings and dents, I modeled this car in the early-mid 1980's, so before they really started getting beat to crap. Future cars will be more "abused" looking!

Nice chip car Andrew. I've made 10 of those exact cars for my layout. They do look good in a solid string, and prototypical too. This car was my first attempt at scratchbuilding. I noticed my building and painting abilities got noticeably better the more I completed! Building that car really got me interested in scratchbuilding. Yours looks really good, and I think the weathering looks about right for a early to mid 80's car.
