So I picked up two Bachmann Spectrum Dash 8's that I'm going to use to finish off an 8 year old project. I'm putting some RailPower Dash 8 shells that I've detailed up on the frame/motor/trucks from Bachmann. I was shocked how little rework the shell and frame required to fit the RailPower shell.
Anyway my real question, I was pleasantly surprised to find what I believe is an 8 pin DCC socked on the board of each of the Bachmann's. I was curious what decoder you guys think would work for these. I was looking at Tonys Train Exchange and they carry an NCE decoder (BACH-DSL) that they claim is for DCC ready Bachmanns. Does anyone have any experience with these? Is this the correct decoder?
It looks like the model came with LED lights so I'm assuming its ready to go for DCC, or would I have to replace them? Ultimately I'm looking to put directional front/rear lights, and front/rear ditchlights on these models. I think I can already see a way to get the lighting down to the ditchlights. If the BACH-DSL decoder is 4 function that would be more than enough correct? 2 functions for front/rear lights, and 1 function each for front and rear ditchlights?
Lots of questions, but thanks for any help.

In all honesty, decoder is the choice of the user. I've long switched to TCS decoders, I've used every brand and have yet to have an issue with them. I can't say that about any other brand.
Robert said it best, a 4 function would be the best starting point, but it depends on what you want.

I was more curious if anyone had used that specific decoder. It lists a lot of Spectrum locos but not the ones I have. I know decoders are users choice, I prefer NCE cause I've had very few problems with them, but I've used TCS and Digitrax also.
I am somewhat confused on how to count different functions though. Are directional headlights counted as one or two functions? The front and rear ditchlights are 1 function each, but if I make them flashing do they each require 2 functions?
Thanks for the advice guys.

So I was looking between either the NCE BACH-DSL and the D13SRP. It looks like the BACH-DSL one is a complete replacement of the board. It seems like they're both 4 function, right now I'm leaning towards the D13SRP since its just a plug in and go option.
Now when they advertise a decoder as 4 function does that usually include the headlights, or do all decoders provide directional headlights in addition to however many functions. (so I would have 4 functions to play with, flashing front and rear ditchlights, and still have directional headlights)

Okay uncle jay, maybe you've got the answer again. Ive got my decoders with an 8 pin plug on them, but the decoder isnt labeled anywhere (on the decoder or in the instructions) which pin on the plug is #1. The board on the locomotive has socket #1, #4, and #8 identified. Any ideas? It's an NCE decoder, D13SRP if it matters.

Thanks. I was also able to find something on NCE's website after about 15 minutes of searching that said the same thing. Guess I should have used Google a little first.
