This unit came to me as a Atlas GP40 shell that a friend was going to throw away... When asked if I wanted it for anything, I said sure. We can always find something to do with it. I decided to make a piece of junk from what was thought to be junk. So it was perfect for a "Rent-a-Wreck" A Athern frame was modified so that the Atlas shell would fit. This also gave me the advantage of using Athern side frames which I removed the double clasp brake rigging and replaced with a set from the Athern dash two style rigging.

That's cool David, I used Athearn frames under my Atlas GP38ACs. The first one is in the middle of the pic.

Randy, you have too many high hoods on yer hands! Send some south! They would look nice in some red & silver, LOL! I have a huge list of things I want to do, but by the time I get there, the price for a standard model will be 300 bucks... Thanks for the comments also Randy! I Haven't bought a freight car in at least five years, The last time I went by the hobby shop, I was shocked at the price of freight cars now a days. But some are really nice out of the box. I still like shaving stuff off and replacing grabs and such. I guess I'm old fashioned. yup...time for a beer...I'm gett'in old!

Very Realistic scheme, David, and Nicely Done to Boot! Thanks Robert! This unit is not per say prototype, but I little bent... My model is based on a ex Sp/SSW, note the nose light. Most if not all of the old HATX 400 series GP40s were of CSX/Chessie heritage. Like the photo below. I wanted to add the separation stripes, but the masking material I was going to use got mis placed and I never could find it. So after doing more searching I came across a photo of a HLCX SD40 rebuilt to 40-2 specs that had the same treatment as my HATX 423. No striping. Just the maroon and blue, obviously got out of the paint shop a little to soon. So I went for that gimmick. As far as the colors I used, i can't right off remember, I used Floquill colors but with some white mixed in to get the faded look. Not one Helm unit is the exact same as another!
