I recently picked up the EMD 3 SD60. Being its RTR, I would like to add a Genesis motor to it. I know the Genesis motors use there electrical pickup through the brass clips on the wheels of the trucks, What im wondering is, to retain the RTR trucks, placing the motor and soldering the 2 wires on each side to the metal clip? Any ideas?

If you aren't adding DCC, then you solder one wire to BOTH clips, and the other to the metal frame, assuming Athearn didn't change their classic design on this model.

Thats what im trying to figure out. I do run DCC and wuld love this engine to be able to keep up with my genesis units. I guess my other alternatives would be to adjust the CV values and such to speed match the RTR to the genesis

If you are adding DCC, then you connect orange and gray wires to the motor leads, the red wire to BOTH metal tabs above the trucks, and the black wire to the frame. Thats if you are hardwiring it.
Now if the SD50 has the light board above the motor, all you have to do is swap out the motor, and connect the motor where the original motor leads are connected on the board.

I'm not familiar with the SD60RTR, but why not just tap the frame and do the isolate and tie in that route?
That is the first option I would look at, but I'm hopeful someone can help you out with a different route.

Honestly, I've never tore into a modern RTR so I'm not totally sure. I figure it can't be too tough though. Let us know how it goes when you get to it.

the Sd60s utilize the same motor postioning as the new genesis units whish allows you to swap the the motors the sd60s do infact run decent with the genesis units at LEAST mine do so if you wanted swap the motor it would be a simple pull the screws and swap

I did a genisis motor swap into a RTR SD40T-2 and I used the stock electrical board that came with the genisis motor. My RTR had the neg a pos wires coming from the trucks so I just hooked them up to the electrical board. If it does not, just hooked up the wires like how a blue box is wired.
