And I begin another project... Anyway I am doing this one for a customer. I have to add the light in the nose, plate off the light in the cab, add MU receptacles, MU hoses, plow, speed recorder, and horn, and possibly metal grabs and Cannon steps. I have to shave off the interior filter hatch and replace with the correct one. I also have to change the brakes from low mount to high mount, anyone have a pair that you don't need?? I am starting with a KATO SD40. Here is a link to the engine... www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=24923pics to follow... -Andrew

Smoke, I'd really be interested in seeing how you tackle relocating the headlight. I'm working on one also, and I think that might be the most challenging part. I've experimented with the nose I cut from my Athearn BB, just haven't perfected it enough to try it out on the Cannon nose!

I saw someone makes photoetched blank outs, that is a great looking protoype, I am sure from what you have done you are going to nail that tired color. I made my decision on which one to model based on the fact I could only local low mount brakes, but yours is for a customer, so as they say, "the customer is always..." BLMA PART NUMBER PER wALTHERS 176-4551 IN 2008 were 5.50

Awesome prototype. Keep in mind that the Kato is an early SD40 and the prototype is a later SD40 with zig-zag pilots. Check for rear shots of the prototype....I bet it has a rear brake stand. Have fun with the build. Greg Davis I thought it would be on thee back as well when it wasn't on either side of the nose, but it isn't. I haven't been able to find out where the brake wheel is. rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=83169Any ideas?? -Andrew

I've experimented with the nose I cut from my Athearn BB, just haven't perfected it enough to try it out on the Cannon nose! I am just going to file away the part where the headlight goes. Using a file is the way I am going to do it. I'll post pictures when I do it.

I don't know, but from what Vince said above they didn't require a brake wheel. I asked a friend about it today and he had never seen a loco without a brake wheel either. At least it will be a popular question...I can see it now "Sir, no offense but there is no brake wheel on the unit." Anyway, I puttied up where the brake mechanism was, and started drilling out the interior filter hatch. Made a stop by the hobby stop today, and grabbed the necessary parts. More pics to come. -Andrew

For whatever reason the L&N ordered a lot of their diesels without handbrakes, must have had chocks in the cab...

Andrew, I'm also currently working on a model of CSX 4601. It is one of three models that have worked their way back onto the work bench. It is joined by CSX SD40-2 8202 and another as-yet-to-be-determined CSX SD40. The reason for the lack of a brake wheel is due to L&N being under control of the ACL. ACL ordered all of its locomotives without brake wheels and influenced the L&N to do the same. Same reason why L&N didn't have any units with dynamic brakes until the arrival of the C628s and SD35s in the mid-60s. A majority of the ex-L&N SD40s had brake wheels mounted at the end of the long hood. I have conflicting info as to what the 4601's original number was. I have in my notes as 4601 being two different L&N numbers and I have photos of both units in L&N paint with brake wheels. Maybe somebody can correct this. The filing method is the best I've found for cutting the headlight into noses. I have some photos on how to do it that I can post, should anybody be interested.

Looking forward to seeing the finished model, I never knew some units never had brake wheels, and I'm to assume that all the ones that have the brake wheel stand at the rear of the long hood were retrofitted later on? from units that didn't have brake wheels.
